It was starting to feel strange waking up to an empty side of the bed every morning. Dante had always been the kind of man who waited for me to wake up and have breakfast with him before he even thought of stepping into his work mode. But lately, I’d roll over to find his side of the bed empty and cold with the faint scent of his perfumes lingering on the pillow being the only evidence that he’d been there at all.I didn’t want to admit how badly it stung.Work was taking up a really large chunk of his time, and though I knew it wasn’t his fault because his personal assistant quitting had thrown his entire schedule into a mess, it didn’t stop the hurt I felt every single time I heard him coming in late after midnight or woke up to his absence early at dawn. Even Abigail had started asking about him occasionally.“Daddy’s busy, sweetheart,” I’d say to her, brushing her hair back as she blinked up at me with those questioning eyes.At dinner one evening, it wasn’t just me who noticed. D

The evening of the following day, it felt like a miracle happened. Maybe the heavens must have heard my cry. The moment Dante walked through the door that evening, I could tell something was different. He looked lighter, like some heavy burden had been taken off him. For what seemed like forever, he didn’t come in with that grumpy look he always had on whenever he did come home. I hadn’t seen him smile in a really long time, but today he was smiling and he looked happy. Like genuinely happy and excited to be back home. “Sienna,” he said almost breathlessly, dropping his keys on the console as Abigail rushed toward him. He lifted her into his arms easily, squishing her face with kisses while she giggled in delight. “Guess what?”I blinked, half amused, half curious. “What?”“I finally got a new PA.” The way he said it carried so much relief, like those words alone meant the weight of the world was no longer pressing on his shoulders. “She comes highly recommended by someone I trust,

Waking up to silence and an empty bed space beside me was the new normal. Dante also didn’t return back home the previous night and I was beginning to lose my mind over the situation. I understood that he had a lot going on at work, but absolutely none of this made sense. Him ghosting me? It was totally absurd and uncalled for no matter what. I deserved some sort of clarity regardless. It was a very bright morning but it certainly wasn’t bright enough to lighten up the darkness that had uninvitedly covered my heart. I could imagine what the inside of my chest must have been looking like these past few days and it was an extremely dark cave with no hope of light at the end. I reached out to grab my phone lazily while I was low-key gaslighting myself to believe I didn’t care if I got a message or missed a call from Dante, but to be honest, that was everything I was hoping for. My heart raced as I opened my phone because I was indeed hoping he had maybe left a message or called while I

The days passed by slowly in the hospital, the same white sterile walls, the same beeping sounds of machines and footsteps down in the hall. I was off the machines now, but my body still felt weak, and the doctor insisted I stay a few more days under close observation. I knew they were only doing their job, but every extra day confined here felt like punishment. What was stressing me out more wasn’t just the lingering ache in my body, but the silence. Dante’s silence. It had been days since I collapsed, days since I’d woken up in this bed, and yet, not a word from him. No call, no visit, nothing. The only proof I had that he was still alive was that stupid Instagram story I’d seen. The one with him at a club, dancing with some woman like he didn’t have a care in the world. Like I didn’t exist.I couldn’t get the image out of my head. The way his hand had rested a little too comfortably at her waist and the smile on his face. Nothing about that scene looked the slightest bit of casual

I laid staring blankly at the pale ceiling the following morning. I had been unable to sleep the previous night. My body might have been tired but my mind was wide awake with a lot of thoughts running through it. But most especially, I was tired of being in this hospital. It was extremely exhausting being kept on a bed expected to just do nothing but rest. It was even more tiring than going about my regular routine. I had completely given up on Dante showing up and I didn’t want to bother myself with anything about him anymore. I told myself not to expect anything. I told myself I should stop waiting for him to suddenly walk through the door. But despite all of that, when I heard a knock on the door just after breakfast, my heart betrayed me and skipped a beat. The door creaked open, and Dante walked in.He looked different. Maybe it was just me, maybe it was my exhaustion, but there was something about the way he looked that gave off weariness. The kind that came from stress, from sl
