Her dreams had been involving boardroom scenes and also Adrian watching her like a hawk. She showered quickly, dressed in a deep blue dress, and tied her hair into a low bun. The reflection in her mirror looked like she had it all together ,but In her heart she felt weak.. When she arrived at Dreamspace, Angela was already waiting outside her office, tablet in hand. “Morning,” Angela said softly, following Christine inside. Christine dropped her bag onto the side couch and rubbed her temples. “Any updates?” Angela hesitated before speaking. “Adrian’s back.” Christine’s stomach clenched. “When did he get in?” “Late last night, apparently. He has called an executive meeting for 10 AM.” Christine’s chest tightened further. Adrian didn’t waste time, and whatever he’d done on his sudden trip, she knew it was another chess move. Another strategy

CHAPTER TWENTY THREEADRIANS POVAdrian Kellerham sat alone in his hotel suite, staring out at New York city. The acquisition meeting had ended hours ago, but he hadn’t returned to his room until late. His mind was elsewhere. On Christine. On her stubbornness. On the way she had chose to constantly provoke him especially this morning when she told him to get out.He leaned back in his chair while removing his tie with a frustrated sigh. Every part of him knew this was the only way. Marrying her wasn’t just a merger tactic. He has already admitted to himself the feelings he has and he could my change them.He stood up from his chair and walked to the minibar in the room, and poured himself a glass of wate

CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR Angela sat alone at her small desk by the executive assistant cubicles. It was still early barely 7 a.m. but Dreamspace’s floor was already busy and filled with persons.. As she drank her coffee she was staring blankly at her computer screen. Emails that were yet to be answered in her inbox, subject lines flashing words like URGENT, RE: SUPPLIER CONTRACT, and BOARDROOM FILES MISSING. She leaned back with a tired sigh, letting her eyes shifting to Christine’s office, where the light was already on indicating Christine was in there already. Again. Does she ever sleep? Angela wondered. The elevator opened softly, and two junior executives from the finance department stepped out, whispering as they walked past. “She looks like who hasn’t eaten in days,” one said, adjusting his tie. “Yeah,” the other replied, pushing his glasses up his nose. “But did you hear what Patel said in the boardroom yesterday? They’re worried Adrian will just push her out and take

CHAPTER 25

CHAPTER TWENTY FIVEADRIANS POVAdrian Kellerham sat in his car for a long minute before entering Dreamspace. The tinted windows reflected his weary eyes back at him. He closed them briefly, inhaling deeply. Today would not be easy. Today, she will not definitely not back and fight him with all she has.He stepped out of his car walking into dreamspace building, his shoes clicking sharply across the lobby floor. People greeting him with tense nods, their eyes moving away quickly. The tension in the building was a living thing now. Getting to Christine’s office it was exactly 9am. Without knocking, he pushed the door open. She sat behind her desk, eyes focused on her computer barely noticing the presence of the person that just stepped in . The early sun caught in her hair.. She didn’t look up when he entered, her pen tapping against her lower lip as she was reading something on her computer intently.“Sit down,” she said quietly. He obeyed, without a word sitting down on the leath

CHAPTER 26

CHAPTER TWENTY SIXCHRISTINES POVChristine was awake before her alarm had the chance to ring. The early light pressed gently through the curtains, casting faint shadows on the wall . She didn’t move at first. Just lay there, eyes fixed on the ceiling, her chest caught in that familiar, unrelenting ache. The kind that felt both dull and sharp all at once. The kind that made breathing feel like a task.Sleep had come in fragments, if at all. And when it did, all she could hear was Adrian’s voice with it steady, deceptively kind. Again and again, her mind replayed the conversation. His eyes, too calm. His words, too careful. That so called confession, looked too vulnerable and had felt more like a strategy than sincerity. She lay quietly on the bed for long in confusion. She could still feel the weight of his gaze, like a stone resting on her chest. Was it honesty?Or just another game he knew he’d win?She couldn’t let herself be moved. Not now.Her phone rang against the nightstand,

CHAPTER 27

CHAPTER TWENTY SEVENCHRISTINES POVChristine was at the boardroom before anyone else arrived. The city beyond the floor to ceiling windows was still not fully bright. A soft grey dawn spilled in, casting long, moody streaks across the polished walnut table. The room felt cold, not from temperature, but from the kind of silence that carried weight. History. Consequence. She set her files down on the table, aligning them with precision she didn’t feel. Her hands, however, betrayed her trembling ever so slightly as they smoothed the files title page.Pull yourself together, she told herself. But the room didn’t make it easy. There was something cathedral-like about it. All that glass and steel and history pressing in. Every chair around the long table had been a throne for a decision that changed the company, the family, the legacy. Triumphs had happened here. So had betrayals. Her eyes drifted to the chair across from her. Her father used to sit there. Before him, her grandfather. She

CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT CHRISTINES POVChristine sat alone in her office, hands tangled in her lap, her gaze locked on the city skyline. The midday sun burned the glass towers bright, but inside her, everything chilled. Not the clinical air‑conditioning kind. A dread colder than any winter storm.Minutes. That was all she had. Minutes before the board reconvened. She hadn’t eaten — a plate of food untouched on the desk. She couldn’t stomach it. How could she, when the foundation beneath her was slipping? Her phone buzzed softly. She glanced down.Dad.His name glowed on the screen. Picture of him in his old sweatshirt, grinning, hair silver at the temples the same smile he gives her when he’s trying to be stronger than he feels. She didn’t answer. Not because she didn’t want to but because if she heard his voice, she might fall apart. And she couldn’t afford to.If he spoke, it’d be hope. “You can fix this, Chrissy. You always do.”But hope today felt like betrayal something soft that c

CHAPTER TWENTY NINEChristines povChristine sat at the long boardroom table staring forward, her fingers locked tightly around the edge of her coffee cup. The cup was warm, but her hands were cold. Around her, the low hum of conversation buzzed like an approaching storm shoes against floor, the soft movement of papers, throat clearing from executives. Her binders sat untouched before her, lined with yellow highlights, tabs carefully marked, numbers she’d memorized like a second language. All the preparation in the world couldn’t still the shaking in her ribs. This was it.The vote. The clause. The one that had haunted her since the moment her legal team confirmed its legitimacy. A document written before she was born, by a man who’d believed a woman’s power should be tethered to a wedding ring.“Ineligible.”The word alone made her taste metal. She sat up as Mr. Hayworth, the most senior member of the board, adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat. His eyes always polite, always

CHAPTER THIRTYADRIANs POVAdrian Kellerham stood at the edge of the glass, the New York skyline sprawling beneath him like a glittering lie. From this height, the world looked clean. The lights in the city made him think back to Christine’s eyes as they glowed with fury instead of the usual warmth. He still hadn’t touched the drink in his hand. The scotch sat in his glass like a promise he couldn’t keep. He rolled it once, then set it down. He wasn’t thirsty. He was burning. Her voice from earlier still clung to the corners of his mind. You think marriage is the answer to everything. She hadn’t yelled. She didn’t need to. The way she’d looked at him shoulders straight, voice like steel it had cut sharper than anything she could’ve screamed. And what’s worse ? She wasn’t wrong. He had wanted to fix it all with a contract, a signature, a deal. Just like he always did. But this wasn’t a merger. This was Christine. And she didn’t want saving especially not by him.Adrian put a hand again
