I slammed the bathroom door shut and pressed my back against it, breathing hard.

My dress was a mess,dark red stains spreading like an ugly badge.

Anger burned through me, hotter than anything I’d felt before.

For a heartbeat, the air seemed to hum around me, and when I looked in the mirror I swore my eyes flashed a strange silver-blue.

“What… was that?” I whispered to myself, gripping the sink. “Get it together, Maya.”

A soft knock followed.

“Maya? It’s Lily. Can I come in?”

I hesitated, then cracked the door. “I’m fine,” I lied.

She slipped in, carrying a damp towel and a small makeup bag. “No, you’re not fine. Lia’s a jealous brat. Don’t let her win.”

I glanced at the mirror again, rubbing at the wine stain. “I shouldn’t have come. Everyone’s staring, and now this.”

“Hey.” Lily touched my arm, her voice firm but kind. “You belong here as much as anyone. You beat every guy on that ice. That’s real.”

The heat inside me flared again, a strange pulse under my skin.
