Ethan’s POVThey’re both still standing there, my mum on one side of the bed and Connor on the other, and neither of them is saying anything. But instead, standing very still. The silence weighs down on my chest, like a brick harder than the pain in my head.“Mum,” I say finally, my voice thin, unsure. “Tell me exactly what happened, whatever it is.”She let out a breathe slowly, like she’s been holding it in for a while. Her fingers tighten around mine.“You fainted,” she says gently.I frown, trying to reach back into my memory, trying to pull up anything that could explain that. There’s nothing. Just static. Fog.“I don’t remember,” I admit. “I don’t remember what caused it.”“That’s normal,” she replied quickly. Too quickly. “The doctor said memory gaps can happen when the body and brain is under stress.”Stress.That word feels too small, to describe how I felt, to describe what exactly was happening. She hesitates, then continues, “They ran some scans, Ethan. Just to be safe.”
