Thirty one: Shadows Of The Past

Nathan's POVThe door slams shut behind Abigail, and I'm left standing in the silence.I walk away in anger. I had hid to watch her hesitate at the door, after I had stormed out leaving her.And when she left I walked back into the dusty room. She shouldn't have been here.I halt by the door and my eyes drifts to the portrait, the familiar face staring down at me with an expression I can't quite decipher. It's been years since I allowed myself to step into this room, let alone confront the memories it holds.Yet here I am, the carefully constructed walls I've built around myself cracking under the tension of this place.I exhale sharply, my hand slipping from the door as I turn back to the desk. The quiet hum of the room surrounds me, and my eyes find the portrait once more. My mother. The way the image captures her so perfectly is unsettling-the strong set of her jaw, the soft glow in her eyes, the way she seemed to command a room without saying a word.Even in a painting, her presen

Thirty two: Secrets At The Table

Abigail's POVMum hums to a song I don't know, softly as she moves around the kitchen, setting the table with a practiced ease that feels almost calming.Almost.I sit at the table, my hands wrapped around a warm mug of tea.The steam curls upward, but I barely notice. My thoughts are being pulled back to last night's encounter. The strange room, Nathan's reaction, and the fear in his voice when he told me to leave. There's something about that room, something he doesn't want me to know.It isn't just about boundaries; it feels like there's more.Like the room is guarding a secret that's been locked away for a reason.I glance up at Ricky, sitting at the head of the table. His face is buried in his newspaper spread open. His expression is calm, his focus seemingly absorbed in the news. But I can't ignore the tension in his posture-the stiffness in his shoulders, the way his hand grips the edge of the paper just a little too tightly."Did you sleep well, Abigail?" mum asks, breaking th

Abigail and Eliana seats still, her eyes are wide open as she stares at us with Keen attention.I can already sense the questions coming out from their stares. And it makes my heart feel tight. My palms gets sweaty as I pick up the envelope, tightening my grip on it.I think about what I'll say to Nathan first, then my eyes locks with Eliana for a moment. Nathan stands glaring at me, his anger very visible.Without a word, I push back my chair and walk out of the room.Eliana calls out to me softly but I don't turn back or answer.I had expect, Nathan to stop me on my way out, but he didn't.He doesn't utter a single word to me, but I can feel his burning glare behind my back.I walk down to my study. I need to think. As I open the doors, the familiar scent welcomes me. It's quiet. It's empty, just what I need at the moment. As I wal

Thirty four: Unspoken Tension

Abigail's POVAs Ricky walked out on Nathan, I too had excused myself from the scenerio, leaving Nathan and mum together. I sit in class, my notebook is open, pen in place, but nothing seems to be making sense. The teachers voice is replaced with the clustered thoughts thats replaying in my mind.Nathan's glare and Ricky's response, walking out without giving an answer. What is he hiding?what is the content of that later?and does it have anything to do with the room?I push the thoughts besides me as I try to focus.Even as I try to focus on the lesson, my gaze drits to the window, watching the branches of a nearby tree sway in the breeze. The way they move so freely, so effortlessly, makes me envious."Abigail," a soft voice calls, pulling me back to reality.I blink, as I turn to see Luca leaning over from his desk next to mine.He furrows his brows as he studies my face."You okay?" he asks, keeping his voice low so the teacher doesn't hear.I nod quickly, forcing a smile. "Yeah.

Thirty five: Tension Unleashed

Nathan's POVI'm not sure about what I had expected when I walked into the café at first, but seeing Abigail sitting there, so at ease with Luca, it's makes my blood boil.I came here to find solace after the incidence with my dad. But now, the sight of her laughing, the way she looked completely unbothered by the mess I'm in-it makes my grip tighten around the door handle. She looks so happy around him.I don't know why I care at all. I mean, she's supposedly my step-sister, and I can't stand her. Definitely not.I debate on going there to crush that fickle of happiness I'm seeing, but I hesitate on my tracks. How can she be that happy with him.Girls, one minute you're in the journal, they'll be having sexual fantasies about you, and the next they're with some other dude. Her laughter floats in the air, as Lucas laughs along. She looks so different. I put my hands through my head but wave it off as I find myself, walking straight toward her like I have some obligation towards her.

I feel like an investigator at the moment. When I reach the door, I hesitate for onl

Thirty seven: Past Secrets

Nathan's POVThe instant I hear the creak of the floor boards, I knew someone had stepped into the room. That room is off-limits. Always has been.Always will be.It's the one place in this suffocating mansion that remains mine, the one space I've managed to keep untouched by everyone else's meddling.I storm down the hallway, my fists clench at my sides, my jaw feels like it could snap. When I open the door, I don't bother to hide my anger. And there she is.Abigail.She stands frozen by the desk, her body stiff, her face pale. Her wide eyes snap to mine, full of emotions I can't untangle-fear, maybe guilt. But one thing is clear: she's been digging where she doesn't belong."What the hell are you doing in here?" My voice comes out sharp and cold, as I fix my gaze on her.She flinches but doesn't cower. Instead, she straightens, her chin lifting it slightly as if bracing herself for a fight."I-" Her voice falters, and she takes a deep breath. "I was just looking-""Looking?" I cut

Thirty eight: Echoes of Secrets

Luca's POVThe park is quiet, except for the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze and the distant laughter of children playing. It's peaceful here, almost like the whole world has paused to catch its breath. The sun is gentle, filtering through the high branches of the massive oak tree above, casting a comforting patchwork of shadows across the soft grass. It feels like a moment suspended in time, a brief escape from everything outside this space.I glance at Abigail whose, sitting cross-legged beside me under the shade of the oak. She's staring out at the small pond in front of us, her expression distant, her posture rigid as though she's trying to distance herself from the moment. It's laughable. What does he think he's doing here? Playing the hero?"Is this what you've become, Luca?" I say, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "A desperate knight playing hero, trying to fix what's broken, thinking you can save her? You're not even close."I can see the shift in his expression. His jaw clenches, his eyes narrowing. He's angry now, but it's not the anger I expected. It's something different. I know I've hit a nerve, but I can't stop myself. It's just too easy to rile him up.Abigail, is standing a little behind him, completely still. Her eyes darts between me and Luca, unsure of what to do.I almost feel bad for her. Almost.Luca steps forward, his eyes flashing with something far deeper than irritation."You're pathetic," he spits. "Hiding behind your insult
