Thud, thud, thud. The sound of my fists hitting flesh was muffled, and at the same time exceptionally loud to my sensitive ears. Axel bore the pain without screaming, not because it wasn't painful, but because he was simply too weak to cry out. All his strength was spent trying to catch enough breath. However, I didn't care. As long as there was life left in him, as long as Axel's blood could still dye my fists, I wouldn't stop. Perhaps even after then, I still wouldn't. After all, this was all his fault. Iris had been gone without trace for two days now, and it was all Axel's fault! Why couldn't they leave her alone! First, they tried to have her executed. They hadn't even paid for that yet, and they tried to kill her again, each time for things she didn't do! Yes, I wasn't without blame in all this. I was guilty, and Iris wouldn't have been in danger a second time if not for me. I would serve my punishment. I would make sure I atoned for the grave sin of not being able to prote

The letter arrived the next morning, delivered by who knows who. Max brought it to me without a word, his face grim."We found this at the border, stuck to a tree with an arrow."I opened the letter and read it once, twice. A third time, because my eyes had to be deceiving me.Alpha Stone,Your mate is in my custody. If you want to see her alive again, you have three days to surrender yourself, your pack, and the Red Moon territory to me. Come alone to the designated meeting point at sunset on the third day. Any sign of your warriors, any trickery, and I will personally ensure Iris suffers the same fate as my daughter.Tick tock, Stone.—Alpha HaydenI crumpled the paper in my fist. My control slipped for a split second and Wrath surged forward, turning my vision red, my claws extending before I could stop them."I'm going to kill him." The voice didn't sound like mine. It was deeper, rougher, layered with fury. "I'm going to tear him apart. I'm going to make him suffer for every sec

Two whole days. Two whole days of Julietta's visits, each one worse than the last. Two more days of her knife, of her cutting me deeper than it took to draw blood for her cursed arm, of her mocking laughter as I refused to beg. Two whole days of disgusting food and dirty water, of my body growing weaker while the tiny life inside me grew stronger —or so I hoped. My baby had to be a fighter, just like her father. I'd taken to talking to her — I'd decided she was a her, though I had no way of knowing yet. I told her stories about Cassian, about Silver Creek, about the pond where we'd first shifted together. I told her about Saoirse and Lily and Max, about the pack that was waiting for our return. I was rambling, but it was the only way I could think to keep myself from breaking down. I had to believe we'd get out of here. It was the only thing keeping me sane. The rope around my wrists was still loose enough to slip free, the fork still hidden. I'd had moments when it'd seem a chance

The world was a blur of pain and darkness. Everything hurt, and I felt myself swimming between consciousness and unconsciousness. I tried as much as I could to stay awake. I couldn't pass out now. Not when I could hear the sounds of fighting, meaning that Cassian was close. My arms were no longer bound, and neither were my feet. I could escape now. Julietta was dragging me through the forest, probably trying to escape before Cassian found us. Because of her arm, she couldn't leave me behind. "Stupid, useless bitch," she griped as she dragged me along the bumpy forest floor. "Fucking nuisance!" There were no guards here, no doors to stop me. I just had to rouse myself enough to fight back. But how was I supposed to do that when my body was broken? Apart from the cuts and bruises her fists had caused, I could feel very clearly that my arm was broken, and maybe one of my ribs too. My lil was split in two different spots, and blood filled my mouth every so often. My head lolled as she

I woke up with a feeling of dread seeping into me, and a feeling like I'd been hit by a truck. The room I was in was dark and unfamiliar, and there was a man sleeping by my bedside, my hand clutched tightly in his, his hair pooled against my arm. Cassian.I hadn't realized I'd made a sound, but Cassian sat up immediately, like even while asleep, he'd been listening for the sound of my voice. Only when I really tried to speak did I realize there was an oxygen mask over my mouth and nose. So how did he know I was awake? I then realized I was hooked up to a countless number of machines, and the one that measured my heart rate seemed to be beeping even faster than usual. So that's why he woke up. "Iris?" He stood, leaning over me. "Are you alright? Where does it hurt? Tell me. I'll call the doctor right away." He looked like a man who hadn't gotten any sleep in days, his eyes blood shot and sunken, with purple bags under them. I clutched his hand, stopping him from pressing the cal
