Chapter 1

Genevieve's point of view."Hey, thief, take it off! That's my mother's favorite gold necklace!" my stepson, Kelvin, yelled, making everyone in the Grand Hall whip their heads toward us."Kelvin, this is not—""Haven’t you had enough? You killed my mother and married her husband. Isn’t that enough? Why are you stealing her things too? Do you really want to be like my mother so much?"I shook my head desperately. "I'm not trying to be like her."Kelvin scoffed."Don’t think you can replace my mother because you successfully killed her. My father and I hate you. You should leave our family before it's too late!"Murmurs erupted in the crowd as everyone was pointing fingers at me."How dare she try to take her sister’s place?""What if she killed her sister just to marry her husband?""Is she planning on killing the boy too? Is that why the boy hates her?""How desperate can she be?"My eyes searched the crowd, looking for my husband. I finally found him, and I waited for him to say some

Chapter 2

Genevieve's Point of View"And what is that supposed to mean? You think divorce is a word you should be throwing around?" Fred's eyes narrowed, anger brewing in them. "It hasn't gotten to divorce yet."My mouth fell open as I watched him in dismay. It hasn't come to divorce... Am I supposed to die before he takes me seriously?"Listen to me, Genevieve, I don't have time for your shenanigans. I have guests waiting for me outside!" Then he stormed out, leaving me to wallow in my thoughts. Why does he always walk out when there's a serious discussion? Why won't he just calm down and listen to what I have to say for once?My eyes moved to the box containing my dead cat, and uncontrollable tears flowed down my face. My only friend was gone forever.I didn't go out of my room, and I couldn't sleep throughout the night. I held my father's photo, staring at it with a sad smile as my mind wandered. Would things be any different if my father was alive? Would I be leading a better life than this

Chapter 3

Genevieve's Point of ViewMy heart broke as I watched them leave. What a life. He'd rather choose a woman he's not familiar with over me because he thinks I killed his mother.Since there was no way I could enter the house, I decided to go spend the night at my friend's. But just as I turned to leave, the door pushed open, and the housekeeper came to me."Mrs. Einstein, why didn't you come in? The door wasn't locked," she said.My mouth fell open in surprise. "What?" I guess it's my fault for not trying to push it first."Come in, it's cold outside." She showed me in.I'm drenched by now, very cold, and my legs could hardly move, but I dragged myself inside. My eyes zeroed in on Fred, who caged Frieda against a wall as they kissed and romanced themselves. Kelvin, on the other hand, was playing a video game.I ignored them and began dragging myself upstairs, but Fred's angry voice stopped me."And where do you think you're going?" he asked."To my room," I answered."Is that the first

Genevieve's Point of ViewWhile in my state of confusion, he took off his jacket and draped it around my shoulders, his eyes softened."Give me a minute," he said.He faced Fred with a deep frown and narrowed, blood-red eyes. "How dare you treat my wife with so much disrespect?!" He landed a punch on Fred's face, sending him straight to the ground.Fear. For the first time since I knew Fred, this was the first time he was actually afraid of someone. He shook his head in desperation."Don... I'm afraid you've misunderstood something. She's actually my wife. We've been—""Shut the fuck up!" the man snarled as he gave Fred a hard kick to his stomach.Maybe I'm secretly a wicked person, because I felt so much satisfaction seeing Fred suffer from this man's wrath."You think I wouldn't recognize my wife when I see her?!"Fred couldn't speak. He wanted to say something, but he looked so scared that he kept quiet instead."Take this motherfucker back!" he ordered his men. "I'll deal with him

Genevieve's Point of ViewThere was a comfortable silence as we ate, even though the man sitting across from me was a total stranger. I couldn't help but secretly steal glances at him, hoping he'd speak up and tell me how or where he knew me."Do you like the food?" he asked, breaking the silence.I nodded. "Yes."He cleared his throat. "Do you remember ten years ago, at Joan's Groove?"His question caught me off guard, and I coughed lightly as I choked on my food."Easy," he said, handing me a glass of water.Joan's Groove! No, don't tell me he's the one!"Are you okay?" he asked."Yeah," I replied."... You promised to come with me to my home and act as my wife, but after you signed the wedding certificate, you vanished."My memory refreshed instantly. Ten years ago, I had just lost my dad and was feeling too sad. My friend took me to a club to loosen up a bit. There, I got drunk and was almost raped by a pervert, but luckily, Enzo showed up and rescued me.To repay his favor, I pro

Chapter 6

Genevieve's Point of ViewI watched as my mother walked out the gate after assuring her that I'd convince Enzo to let Fred go. It was obviously not going to be an easy job, but I'd give it a try."Where is your mother?" Enzo asked immediately I entered the living room."She's gone," I answered."Oh." He pouted in disappointment. I guess he thought I would invite her in."Alright. Let's go visit that motherfucker, then I'll take you to my parents' afterwards," he said. I could only nod in agreement and follow him.********I shivered as we walked down a dimly lit, narrow, and suffocating passage, its stone walls slick with moisture and the stench of mildew hanging heavy in the air. The farther we went, the colder it got."Here." Enzo handed his jacket to me when he noticed I was shivering."Thank you," I muttered quietly before wearing it.After about fifteen minutes of walking through the passage, I could finally hear an agonizing scream, and the screamer's voice sounded familiar—Fred

Genevieve's point of view.An awkward silence fell on us. I was in shock that his father would say those words at our first meeting.I released a nervous laugh. "Sir, I am not...""I don't approve of your union with my son!" he repeated, his voice firm."And what makes you think I brought her here for your approval?" Enzo fired back in a challenging tone."Listen to me, son. I will approve of any woman you bring home—but not her. Your wife can't be her."His wife can't be me? Why does it feel as if his father has something against me? Or have we crossed paths before and I unknowingly offended him?"Why can't she be my wife?" Enzo asked the question I couldn't voice out. There was another brief silence, which his mother broke."Enzo, her father—"A bang on the table cut her off. I slightly flinched as Enzo's father got up. The guilt in his eyes faded into anger in an instant."I have made myself clear. She cannot be your wife!"Enzo got up as well and helped me up too, then intertwined

Genevieve's Point of View"Mrs. Enzo," I heard Cora whisper as she tapped my shoulder gently."Hm," I groaned sleepily, pushing her hand away as I tried to go back to sleep. It was a long, terrifying, and sleepless night for me. I was traumatized by last night and could barely get any sleep."Mr. Enzo is preparing breakfast for you," her voice came again. My eyes snapped open at those words. Every ounce of sleep vanished from me immediately."What did you say?" I asked, trying to confirm that I heard correctly."Mr. Enzo is preparing breakfast. He said we should inform you and help you...""Show me to the kitchen," I interrupted her as I hopped out of bed.> > > > > > > I stopped abruptly at the sight before me, and I suddenly forgot how to breathe. Enzo stood at the stove, with his broad back facing me, entirely shirtless with nothing but a black apron hanging loosely around his neck and tied low at his waist. My eyes traced from his wide and powerful shoulders down to his lean, scu

Chapter 10

Genevieve's Point of View"Are you sure you're okay?" Enzo asked me for the nth time."Yeah."He stared at me for a moment before returning his focus to his phone. We're currently in the car, heading to the mall. After a few minutes, we arrived, and the driver parked the car in a space in the parking lot."Let's go, baby," Enzo said.He alighted and held the door open until I alighted too. He reached for my hand and intertwined our fingers."What should we get first?" he asked."Shoes," I answered, totally absentmindedly as my mind was focused on how to sneak out."Alright, let's see what we can get from this shop." He pointed at a bag shop not too far from us."Hm," I hummed in reply. We entered the shop. I tried to find an opportunity to sneak away but didn’t get any, as Enzo was closely following me. He kept recommending brands of bags to me, telling me how they'd look good on me—a stranger might even mistake him for a salesman."I need to come up with a plan," I murmured to myself
