Chapter One

Duncan“Not this again,” I mumbled to myself as I reviewed the most recent report that came across my desk. Rogues had been spotted out near our western border. While rogue attacks were not an uncommon occurrence, my wolf, Conan, and I were on edge. They were too close to the Red Wolf Compound. I sat, looking out over the training field. My head trainers, Tabitha and Oscar, were finishing up training for the day. The autumn air was starting to turn and it wouldn’t be long before winter had fully taken hold. I liked the changing of the seasons. To me, with each passing season, there were new opportunities. The Crescent River Pack sat in a beautiful location, where the forest met the mountains. Coral“Harley! Come talk with me!” I called out to my sister, who had been too busy learning about Luna duties over the past few weeks to spend enough time with me. I had missed my sister over the last year, and even though we had spent a lot of time together over the last month, I needed more time. I just needed more time. Honestly, she had been spending plenty of time with me. ‘She will be over soon. She is finishing up with Raina,’ my wolf, Ivy replied. Ivy had been spending a lot of time talking with Lela, Raina’s wolf, to learn more about our abilities as a red wolf. Even I had been spending a lot of time with Raina. Raina was the first red wolf and trained all new red wolves. I was also learning from the red wolves. Talia was closest in age to me - just a few months younger, but she had been at the red wolf compound since she was 13. Chapter Three

Duncan I was dragging my feet. I did not want to go meet with Coral. In the time she had been at the compound, I had been successful in avoiding her, although that did not mean that I was slacking in other responsibilities to my red wolf. I was providing protection. I was checking up on her often. I had honestly done everything but meeting with her. I might be a dick most of the time, but that didn’t mean that I was going to ignore my red wolf completely, It was my job to keep her safe. I sighed and left the compound. My head needed to be clear when meeting with Coral, and right now, it was a mess. I decided to go for a run before I met with Coral. That always seemed to help me feel better. Shifting quickly, I headed out back towards the Crescent River Pack. Running was always something that helped me feel better. Giving Conan a little bit of control allowed me to feel lighter; a bit freer. The responsibilities of an Alpha could be great. There was much more management that went on

Coral ‘Where is he?’ My wolf growled in my head. It had been over two hours since Harley and Anders had left the compound. Although Anders didn’t tell me exactly when Duncan was going to arrive, I thought for certain he would be here by now. Both the packhouse for the Red Moon Pack and Crescent River Pack were an hour from the Red Wolf Compound. And unless Duncan was literally walking, it would take him less than an hour to arrive. Most just shifted into their wolves and ran, making the journey in 45 minutes or less. ‘I don’t know.’ I replied to Ivy, my frustration clear. I already felt as if I was at a disadvantage when it came to my red wolf training. Outside of Raina, who was the first red wolf in 200 years, each red wolf who had come after her had come to the compound immediately after shifting. That meant that I had missed out on nearly five years of training. One thing that Talia and Vivian had shared with me was how calming the guardian wolves could be for their red wolf. B

Chapter Five

I left the small cafe, heading over to my cabin. I didn’t bother looking back. I knew that Duncan was following behind me. ‘He isn’t happy.’ My wolf stated the obvious.‘And do you think I care if he isn’t happy? He left me sitting around, waiting for him for three hours. Then he shows up, acting like he is going to swoop in and save the day. Whatever.’ I rolled my eyes at my wolf. ‘Well, he is still an Alpha.’ She replied. She could be such a drama queen. ‘Is that what his wolf is saying to you? That I should be more respectful because he is an Alpha?’ I was getting more and more pissed off, and Duncan hadn’t even said anything. My wolf stepped back a bit, retreating and avoiding my question. “Coral. Where are you going?” Duncan asked, attempting to grab my arm. I pulled away from him, stopping in front of my cabin. “I am going home. It has been three hours, Duncan. Three hours since Anders told me that you were coming to meet with me. Coral“So, he really showed up?” Vivian asked, looking at me from across the table. Her red hair was naturally curly and she usually had it up in a ponytail. Today was no exception. I found it fascinating to have so many redheads in one place. Growing up, most of the time I was the only one with red hair, so I stood out. Here, it seemed like there was red hair flying by every time you turned around. Talia’s hair was crazy. She joked about how hard it was to maintain and that it had a mind of its own. I nodded, taking a bite of homemade pizza. “He did. It was nice to finally sit down and get to talk to him.” I hadn’t seen Duncan since I had arrived at the compound house, but I knew that he was here. For as much as he could feel where I was, I could also feel where my guardian wolves were, well, at least if they were close. Harley was at the Red Moon Pack. Adam was somewhere

Duncan’s POV I turned away from Coral, walking back into the meeting room. We had only taken a short break as we waited for my father to arrive. I had stepped out to the foyer, hoping to go say hello to Coral. I knew that she was meeting with Talia and Vivian for dinner. I was not prepared, however, for seeing her talking to Charlie. I wasn’t very familiar with Charlie, but I didn’t like him. Especially after seeing him with Coral. It didn’t help that I had also seen him sniffing around a few other she-wolves, including my sister. Charlie had come to the Silver Springs Pack a month ago to add a built in shelf to my office at the packhouse. He had been staying with Samantha and her mate for a few months. DuncanI had returned to the packhouse at the Crescent River Pack after the meeting with Luz. At this point, all that we had was speculation as to what we thought was going to happen. Raina asked Luz to stay and talk some more to try to figure some more things out. It was all quite confusing. What was clear, however, was that there was a significant threat on Coral. It also seemed as if the vampires didn’t fully understand how the red wolf worked. Individually, Coral was powerful. The extent of how powerful was still unknown, although the demonstration of getting everyone to stop fighting during a recent battle let all of us know that she had not tapped into a tenth of her abilities. Coral rounded out the red wolves. Each red wolf had a specialty area. They all had similar abilities, but some showed more strengths in specific areas. Coral Sleep eluded me most of the night. I tossed and turned, my mind racing through most of the worst case scenarios. I hadn’t asked Duncan for more details because I knew that I needed to wait for Raina. Even if Duncan knew, he wasn’t going to tell me. It scared me to think that it was somehow about me. There was very little threat to any specific red wolves since the first red wolf, Raina. Why would someone be so interested in me? What made me different from the other red wolves? I laid in bed worried about that most of the night, although Duncan’s wolf, Conan, was also interesting and occupied many of my thoughts. The interaction with Conan had left me with many questions. Duncan “Are they coming for me?” Coral asked the question that I already knew the answer to, but I knew had to be answered for everyone to hear. Luz had confirmed the answer to this question last night, but I knew that there had to be more that was learned when Raina met with Luz and Victor. Raina was struggling to find the right words, so Callan spoke. “The warlock, Luz, told of an elder vampire who foretold the future of the vampires, and it was led by the last red wolf.” Callan paused, and I could see Talia and Coral looking at each other. “Talia is the last red wolf.” Coral stated, her body tensing as she spoke.
