Chapter 31

Sophia's POVThe instant dragged as the horror unfolded right before us in the moment. The wolf's lunge was fierce and a rush of motion. Ethan seemed reluctant to injure the young shifter since he couldn't fully manage his transformation, but the big mystery was how he'd ended up here?Who released him? Just as my heart squeezed tight while the wolf barreled toward us, Ethan acted. He didn't pause. He didn't bark an order. He just positioned himself squarely between the monster and me. It was a gut-level, complete gesture of defense that robbed me of any remaining breath. The wolf, its reason vanished, didn't recognize its leader; it viewed a barrier. It crashed into Ethan with the impact of a vehicle. The noise was gut-wrenching—a pained huff from Ethan, a furious bark from the wolf. They turned into a tornado of biting fangs and ripping talons. Ethan was restraining himself, that was clear. He aimed to overpower, not destroy, one of his own members, even like this. A harsh, uneven s

Chapter 32

Sophia's POVThe charm, gleaming gold yet shadowy, seemed like solid proof of all my suspicions. We hurried back to the gathering in the hall. Climbing the steps, my pulse thumped wildly at what we'd uncovered. I held the facts on Jess, and I meant to call her out.I swept my eyes over the hall, zeroing in on them. Ethan and Jessica, positioned by the bubbly drink setup. She was chuckling, her fingers grazing his sleeve lightly, her collarbone exposed. He was paying attention, his look even, but he wasn't shrugging her off. The image stoked the blaze in my core, shifting terror into a justified, scorching fury.Envy, sharp and bitter, knotted in my stomach. This lady had aimed to get me taken out, or at least badly torn up, to clear her path. And he stood there, chatting with her.I didn't pause to ponder. I just acted.I marched to the middle of the swaying area, the tunes stumbling as folks spotted my firm walk and the fierce spark in my stare."I've got something to say!" I hollere

Chapter 33

Sophia's POVMarcus's kiss was comforting, gentle, caring—it was soft and compassionate, a far cry from the fierce and distant intensity I'd shared with Ethan. It only went on for a handful of moments, but it felt so reassuring that I set aside thoughts of mate links, foretellings, and lethal competitors. I allowed myself to feel desired, and in my broken condition, I desired him in return. The refuge shattered with a bellow of raw, unchecked fury.We leaped back, but too late. Ethan loomed in the curved entry, his body quaking, his gaze shining with a wicked golden hue. He wasn't merely mad; he was savage."You," he growled, the term a harsh damnation directed at Marcus. He bridged the gap in a flash. No alert, no talk. His knuckles slammed into Marcus's chin with a nauseating snap. Marcus reeled, but he didn't drop. The shock on his features twisted into a sharp, pent-up wrath of his own."Back off, Ethan!" Marcus thundere

Chapter 34

Ethan's POVThe image of his fingers on her chin, their features so close, stirred a urge to entomb him and confine her to her quarters. It wasn't the kiss that crushed me; it was the closeness. The tender manner he lifted her face, the gentleness in her gaze toward him. It was a dialogue she and I had never shared. Our tie was born in blaze and frost, in resistance and primal craving.This... this was different. Something that struck me as more perilous than any bodily disloyalty. They pulled apart like they'd been on the verge of something. Sophia's expression was one of remorse, her eyes stretched with alarm. Marcus had the nerve to appear nabbed, but the rebellion in his stare was a new slight.I yearned to make him pay dearly."Step back from her," I uttered, my tone perilously hushed, the beast lurking just under my skin.Marcus held his ground. "Ethan, this isn't what—""I said," I snarled, closing the gap in a few long steps, "step back from what's mine." I thrust him away, my

Chapter 35

Ethan's POVThe scene of that showdown lingered in the atmosphere, blended with Jessica's scent. His parting shot came off more like a warning than anything else. It kept looping in my mind, over and over. I craved some distance. I had to sort through it all, since that was the one thing I wasn't managing right now.Idris strode next to me, a quiet, towering figure. He was smart enough not to toss out hollow comforts. He allowed the quiet to drag on, giving the breeze a chance to clear the mess from my thoughts. At last, he broke in, his words a deep vibration. "The young one's got some bite, huh."I didn't have to wonder who he referred to. "She's impulsive. Driven by feelings. She doesn't grasp what her choices lead to.""Does she have to grasp it," Idris pushed back, "or does she need someone to listen?" He paused, facing me squarely. "You can't order a gale to settle, Ethan. You can only figure out how to navigate it. Right now, you're attempting to tie it down, and you're ripping

Chapter 36

Sophia's POVIt had been three days.Three days. That's how long that brute Ethan had kept me confined in my room, turning it into a prison. He'd let me out this morning without so much as a syllable, the icy quiet between us hanging like a brewing storm. My fury had shifted from a seething boil to a solid, piercing gem of bitterness. And I knew just how to wield it.I'd used the time outside the room to purposefully track down Marcus. Our practice rounds turned into my getaway. Where Ethan was distant and stingy, Marcus was all fervent, concentrated affection. He didn't merely fix my stance; he broke down the reason for each action. He cheered my improvements. He regarded me as a fighter emerging, not a breakable trinket to stash. I embraced it, chuckling a bit too vibrantly at his wry quips, allowing my fingers to rest on his sleeve a tad too extended. I knew the whispers would reach Ethan. I hoped they would. That's the point. The

Chapter 37

Ethan's POVHer aroma lingered around me longer than it should have. I wasn't sure if it stemmed from the sting of seeing her and Marcus so close and affectionate, or from how stunning she appeared that evening—and I couldn't even admit it because of my stubborn pride. She carried notes of wine and crisp breeze, a stark contrast to the subtle wolf scent that had stuck to me all night, yet my thoughts fixated on what they might be up to together. My inner beast was convinced they probably wouldn't go too far, but the unreasonable side of me suspected otherwise, given Marcus and I had always been competitors. The vision of her tilting toward Marcus, her chuckle overly vibrant, her gaze hazy with alcohol, seared into my brain.I'd pretended she was invisible. Mere nothing. It was my sole shield against the raw, tearing envy risking my composure. To react would hand her leverage, confess that her minor revolt with my brother could truly harm

Chapter 38

Ethan's POVI left her dozing in my study, all curled up on the couch under the blanket I'd tossed over her. The flavor of her lingered on my mouth, this weird blend of saltiness, wine, and heated giving in. My shirt buttons were all wrong, and my fingers were pale from clenching the doorframe so hard, trying to steady myself. The wolf inside me was calm for now, but the guy in me was still spinning from that intense time we'd just shared. That wasn't making up; it felt more like a truce hammered out with roughness and desire. I had no clue what she'd do when she came to.I headed into my personal office, craving something—anything—to shake off the haze in my mind. Her smell and the thoughts of her were still stuck to me.The door swung open, no knock. Jessica. She came in fast, her gaze instantly picking up on my messy look, the light mark on my lip. Her face showed just the right mix of worry and judgment."Ethan, this is

Chapter 39

Sophia's POV The world didn't pause or crumble into fragments. It simply froze in place. I caught sight of his hands—the very ones that had been woven through my hair just minutes before—now settled on Jessica's hips. I saw his lips, still carrying the flavor of my fury and sorrow, now locked against hers. And I saw his eyes, wide open and fixed right on me from over her shoulder. There wasn't any surprise in them. No remorse. Just a stark, defiant glare. As our gazes connected, his grip around her strengthened, drawing her tighter against him, intensifying the kiss purely for my sake. It was all an act. A cruel, deliberate strike meant to hurt. An odd, freezing composure washed over me. The fire from our recent passion, the bewilderment, the faint wish that perhaps something genuine lurked under all that resentment—it all vanished right then. This was the reality. This was who he truly was. A schemer. A despot. Someon

Chapter 40

Ethan's POVThose words weren't a challenge but a promise, a subtle threat of what Ethan owns, and even Sophia looked stunned by what he had said.It felt like he'd just knocked the wind out of me for a second. I couldn't wrap my head around the absurdity spilling from his mouth as I stared at my brother, my rival from the very beginning. My gaze kept shifting from him to Sophia, who still seemed shocked. They had some kind of agreement. A scheme. While I was sinking in the mess of the bond, they'd been secretly putting together an escape plan for just the two of them, heading off to some perfect getaway. The betrayal hit so hard, delivered so ruthlessly, that it shut down my ability to think straight. The animal inside me surged forward."You..." I muttered, the word coming out as a deep growl. "You've been scheming this. All along. Your training sessions, your hushed talks... it was all building up to this. You were just bidin
