Something had changed his mood. The switch in his attitude became more evident when we left the reception to head to his office and he left me there. No goodbye, no reason. He'd simply said, "I'll be right back." And stormed out with his phone to his ear, arguing in Russian. And he'd been on a call ever since. Whoever it was had to have been the one who'd messaged him at the lobby.Despite Killian’s evident change in attitude, that was still not enough to bring down the awe I felt every time my eyes took in the insane detail of the office he left me in.Unlike the calm, old atmosphere of the reception, everything in this office appeared completely modern. From the one-way sliding glass doors to the glass desk that held nothing more than a single monitor and keyboard. There was also a large white couch with a short table before it.Still, there were only so many times a place could be ogled, regardless of how beautiful it was. Curiosity eventually got the better of me.My mind barely r

It took every ounce of self-control in me not to fire the man who called Ariella a whore on the spot. It took even more of it for me to make it through the whole day without crashing out. The production team hadn't been the only unit to have heard something, though. It seemed Ariella's arrival had shaken the whole company up. Ruth had filled me in with all the rumors spreading around the employees, and each was more absurd than the others. After a full day of enduring bullshit meetings with entitled bastards and all sorts of other responsibilities, it was finally my half-hour break time. A foreign giddiness burned inside me as I approached my office. Usually, going into the dim, empty room only left me more exhausted than working. Loneliness had never bothered me because it had become normal. But now the room wasn't empty, and there was no way to be alone. The first thing that registered when I pulled the door open was the sound. Some sort of animated cartoon that had likely

The grey metal door was shoved open. Killian stood at the post, the harsh light outside framing his body perfectly. "Ella, hey. You don't have to run from me." He stepped in, walking towards me. My whole body trembled when the door slammed shut behind him, leaving us in darkness. "Fuck." Boxes rattled, his feet crushing into cardboard he couldn't see. The room was pretty big, and the only source of light were the high as fuck windows at the top. I'd curled against a cabinet, sitting on some discarded files. Finally, his weight settled next to me with a grunt. "You should be working. You're not on break, Ruth won't be happy." Anything to get him to walk out that door and leave me alone. It was bad enough that being free came with its own shackles. But Killian had brought along with him an emotion that felt too foreign to me to be real. It felt sweet. Like what a younger me thought safety would feel like when my knight in shining armor came to save me from hell. Only my min

Dimitri stood in the doorway, leaning against it while glaring at me. "Do you have any idea how many times I've called you? We need to go before the lead gets cold. Your hot secretary's distracted anyway. She can't know where we're going or she'll snitch." His Russian accent was thick in his words. Unlike me, who grew up among Americans long enough to adapt their way of speaking, Dimitri was full Russian. His jet-black hair fell into his eyes in waves. The viper tattoo that branded his neck flexed as he took a drag from the cigarette between his fingers. "Take that shit out of my fucking company. You know you aren't supposed to fucking smoke here." I stood, extending my hand to Ariella to pull her up, but she just stared. At my hand, then at Dimitri standing and smirking in his all-black polo shirt and cargo pants. Then back at my hand. "Ohhh." He stepped in fully, staring at Ariella with a hunger that clouded my mind with unjustified irritation. "This the girl you found?

The first thing that hit me was the smell. The familiar scent of blood covered up by bleach and perfume. The warehouse looked pretty basic on the inside.Metal walls and pillars evenly spaced. Large cargo boxes, even some bags that were clearly filled with some sort of powder. But that was where the normal ended. A whimper from the center of the large enclosed space caught my ear.In the dim flickers of the bulbs hung on the high roof, some men were tied to wooden chairs. They wore nothing but underwear, eyes covered, lips sealed with tape."Stay behind me and don't say anything. If any of these men walk out of here tonight, it'll be a good way to spread word of your return."He walked towards the center, muttering slightly beneath his breath. "That's if they can even speak after tonight."His footsteps echoed against the sand-covered graphite floor, attracting the attention of his captives.Dimitri shuffled after him, and after a moment of discomfort and fear, I followed. The regret
