I awoke at teatime. The nurses were checking my observations again, which is what had woken me up. I had become unsettlingly, quickly accustomed to the sounds of the machines and the hospital wing outside. From nurses and doctors passing and talking at all hours, to the beeps of the machines at their steady rhythm, and to the beeps of the tests when they ran them each hour.
