Yara's POV"Do you have any idea who Luna Yulia's current handmaiden is?"The girl who was kneading some dough for bread glanced up at me. Raven's POV Jaxon was not by my side when I woke that night.After stretching my hands above my head, I turned to snuggle closer to my mate, but I met a cold and empty side where he was supposed to be sleeping."Jax?" Malachi's POV "I was told I have a visitor!" I announced as I walked towards the throne room. "This had better be good." Behind me, Tobias struggled to keep up with me. He finally reached my side, huffing and puffing tiredly. "Yes, Alpha. It is one of the men you once did business with. He Is here with some more business." I stopped in my tracks and turned to my beta. "You don't say!" Tobias nodded eagerly and I left him behind, pushing the door of the throne room and walking inside. I reached my throne and sat down on it, gesturing to Tobias to bring in the visitor. In a matter of seconds, Tobias returned with the bastard right behind him. The same slimy idiot who had tried to hoodwink me mere months ago. The nerve he had to come back here, when I could have my guards grab him and throw him in the dungeons. Jaxon’s POV The sun was beginning to dip low over the palace gardens when my mother found me. I sat under the old oak tree near the eastern wing of the castle. Across from me, sitting on a marble bench was my mother. There was a teacup in her hand, though she had long stopped drinking from it. Her attention was completely on me. “I need you to help Raven prepare for the Luna coronation,” I told her, folding my arms across my chest. “The presentation is only a few days away, and I trust you to get her ready.” My mother’s lips pressed together thoughtfully. She set the teacup down on the bench beside her and leaned forward slightly. “Have you told her everything, Jaxon?” I frowned. “What do you mean?” She gave me a pointed look. “You know what I mean. Have you told her about the past? About Ramsey and Rachael?” I nodded stiffly. “I have. She knows.” I forced a small smile. “She’s accepting of it. Raven's POV When the Queen Luna sent for me, I had no option but to answer. I was flanked by guards on both sides as I walked to her room and I found that extremely absurd. I was capable of protecting myself even more than these guards were capable of protecting me. I didn't need an entourage everywhere I went. Still, I kept my thoughts to myself. This was not their first attempt to make me look weak, anyway. I still remembered that incident with the Elders in Jaxon's Council; I was not sure I could forget it so quickly. But I was here for Jaxon and Jaxon alone. Anyone else who thought that it was strange for a woman to wear men's clothes were of no consequence to me. Yara's POV The first thing I saw when I pulled back the edge of the curtain was a man being shoved out of the front entrance of the pack house. He hit the ground with a loud grunt and rolled to his side. The guards behind him turned and walked back in while he was on the ground. The man stayed there for a bit, breathing heavily and cursing under his breath. There was something about him that caught my eye. He looked very familiar. His hair was longer than most of the men I’d seen around here and his clothes, though rough and tattered and dirty, were clearly once expensive. He looked like a royal man who had been thrown out of his palace. There was a lean strength in the way he pushed himself up and dusted his palms on his trousers. I squinted hard through the thin curtains. Where had I seen that face before? I had heard a few words earlier, when I passed by Alpha Malachi’s meeting room. Yara's POV "I wonder if he's going to guess what I want," I mumbled to myself as I made my way back to the quarters. "Or if he's going to be too full of himself to be controlled." There was something about Ramsey that didn’t sit right with me. Maybe it was the disgust he wore on his face when he looked at me. Maybe it was the way he acted as if he owned everything even though he was in rags. I couldn't tell. But there was something there. Back in my room, I tried to sleep. But my eyes kept snapping open, watching the sliver of sunlight cut across the ceiling. It felt like the hours dragged themselves through thick mud.
