Chapter 101ADRIAI woke up warm. This was the first thing. Before the ankle, before the situational awareness, before the operational assessment of where I was and what position I was in and what the light through the windows suggested about the time—before all of that, there was just warmth. Pervasive, thorough, the kind that had settled into the deeper layers while I slept and was now arguing against the prospect of moving. The sofa.I remembered, gradually. Damien had been firm about the elevation. More firm than I'd expected, given that firmness about my wellbeing was not something I had extensive prior data on. He'd arranged the cushions himself, had found the footstool from the study that I hadn't known existed, had produced a blanket from somewhere that I also hadn't known existed and had asked no questions about, and had said *two hours* in the tone that meant the conversation was finished.I had said fine and lain down mostly to stop the conversation, expecting to be awake a

Chapter 103ADRIAThe second call came twelve minutes later.I know it was twelve because I had been counting, in the way I counted things when I needed something concrete to do with the part of my brain that was trying not to spiral into the implications of everything I'd just understood. Twelve minutes of Damien sitting beside me with his arm around my shoulders, his breathing gradually evening out again, the slow return of someone going back toward sleep. And then his phone again. He answered it on the second buzz, already awake enough that the ring hadn't needed to finish. His voice was alert immediately in a way that the first call hadn't been."What."A pause.Something changed in the room. I couldn't have explained how I knew—I was still lying still with my eyes closed—but the quality of his attention shifted. The kind of shift that happened when information arrived that reorganized things."When?" he said.Pause."How public."Pause."Four calls." His voice had gone completely

Chapter 105ADRIA"Both," I said. "What's the market doing?""Kane Industries up six percent at open," Elijah said. "Four of Castellan's institutional investors have publicly indicated they're reviewing capital allocation toward Kane. Three of Castellan's mid-tier clients have requested meetings with Kane Industries in the last two hours." He paused. "Castellan stock is down three points.""Damien knows," I said. "His board is convening. He's on calls now.""We know," Elijah said. "We heard.""What did you hear," I said carefully."Everything from the sofa," Elijah said. "The investigator call and the Darius call." A pause. "Adria.""I know," I said."The investigator—""I know," I said. "We'll get to that. The immediate crisis first."A brief silence from everyone, which was the family's way of acknowledging that I had set something aside and they were going to respect that for the duration of the operational window."The Miss Andy problem," I said."Acute," Adrian confirmed. "Darius

Chapter 107ADRIAThe day was ordinary in a way that felt almost suspicious. That was the thing about the days that came after the difficult ones—they arrived with the same light and the same kitchen sounds and the same small rhythms of a house functioning, and the contrast was sharp enough to feel like a trick. I had been shot at yesterday. I had heard a phone call that had rearranged my understanding of the last sixteen years. I had fielded a family crisis across a laptop in a back sitting room with my ankle wrapped and my husband thirty feet away and a Bloomberg correspondent with a fifteen-minute deadline. And now it was Tuesday morning and Damien was making coffee and asking me how the ankle felt with the focused practicality of a man who had decided that today was going to be a recovery day and was implementing that decision with characteristic thoroughness."Better," I said. Which was true. The swelling had reduced overnight. The painkillers had done their work."You're going t

Chapter 109ADRIAI wasn't looking at it. I want to be clear about this. I was not running surveillance on my husband's phone. I was sitting three feet away doing the last of the evening's exercises and not looking at anything except my ankle. The screen lit up.Unknown number.I looked at it the way anyone looked at a lit phone screen—reflexively, without decision. It rang again. He'd been in the bathroom for two minutes. The shower wasn't running yet.I picked it up because I was expecting Adria—my sister, Sophia, she sometimes called from numbers I didn't have saved when she was traveling, and the shape of the unknown number read as an international prefix—"Hello?" I said. The voice on the other end was not Sophia. It was raspy. Low. The particular quality of a voice that had been altered, either naturally or deliberately, to be difficult to identify. It said nothing for a moment. Then:"Tell Castella
