ISABELLA’S POVThe family gathering turned the whole house and backyard into a loud celebration. Relatives from Mexico and a few neighbours filled every corner. Aunties hugged me tight, uncles patted my back, cousins laughed and talked over each other, music played from somewhere in the yard and plates of food passed from hand to hand. I moved through it all with a smile fixed on my face. I helped carry drinks, nodded when people asked how I had been. I tried to look like I belonged there but inside I felt small. Like I was pretending to be the Isabella they remembered.I was on my way to get another drink when Aunt Marisol called out to me. She stood in a group with three other aunties and two cousins.
