Chapter One: Meeting Tristan

His legs gave out. Dust flew as his butt hit the hard pavement.“Hey, what the hell?” he yelled. He looked up, ready to curse out whoever bumped into him.But the view from below was insanely melodic. It was surprisingly precious. What the fuck, he thought. His throat went completely dry and his pulse raced like crazy. Am I dying, or did I just hit some forbidden level of reality? The stranger wore a massive black hoodie over a crisp white polo that made every sharp angle of his Latino flawless face pop. His curly locks fell perfectly. Every instinct screamed at Josh to run or faint in a dramatic movie-worthy collapse. He was straight. He had straight hair and straight A’s. He was the king here. This fluttering in his chest was absolutely forbidden.“Are you okay? I am really sorry and I did not mean to,” the stranger said. The voice was strong and pleasantly deep. It sent an unwanted crimson peach stain creeping up Josh's cheeks. He had to act forward. He was perfect. He scrambled f

Chapter Two: Convenient Fate

Josh walked through the quiet night while his glasses slipped down his nose. A rotting stench suddenly filled the air and made him grimace. He covered his face in disgust and let the faint scent of soap on his fingers fight the smell. He stopped in front of the convenience store where blinding fluorescent lights spilled onto the dark street.Josh hesitated. He was a smart sixteen-year-old with critical thinking skills, but his feet wouldn't move. Finally, he sighed and pushed open the massive transparent door.Wonderful coldness hit his skin like thin ice. He wore a plain white t-shirt that gave his tan shoulders an agonizing flex as he walked toward the counter.“Hi, miss. Good evening,” he said with a charming smile. The young woman behind the counter didn’t even look up from her phone. She chewed gum and scrolled with rapid fingers. She gave him a quick and professional smile that held zero interest before returning to her screen. No greeting. Nothing. Josh stood there as the silen

Chapter Three: Non-Biological Father

Josh bolted upright as his head throbbed with a sickening liquid heat. It felt like his brain was being shredded from the inside. Before he could even squint against the blinding morning sun, a thunderous knock shook the entire room. The sound was sharp and violent."Open up! I know you’re in there, Josh!"That voice. The recognition hit him like a physical blow. Josh scrambled out of bed and ignored the haze in his mind as he lunged for the door. His palm slammed against the freezing metal knob. It bit into his skin as he ripped the door open. The wood groaned as it swung wide.Josh froze. His hands balled into white-knuckled fists at his sides. His breath hitched and turned shallow as he stared at the figure in the hallway. It was his non-biological father standing with an unyielding aura. A dark blue suit wrapped around him, and his dark blue slacks matched perfectly.Josh’s eyes darted down to the phone his father held tight. The screen flashed with a fresh notification from the s

Chapter Four: Josh Never Wanted To Feel It

The crowd roared as one. Their voices fused into a deafening wave that shook the park foundations.Tristan launched off the ramp and defied gravity for a heartbeat. He landed with a sharp snap.He was perfectly balanced. His posture was a mix of elegant control and raw power. The atmosphere melted under his winning aura.Josh couldn’t look away. He saw the pulse thrumming in Tristan’s neck.He saw the way Tristan's eyes locked onto the wooden bench where Josh sat. Josh’s breathing turned shallow. The dusty scent of the park disappeared. Only Tristan remained.A woman reached out to touch Tristan’s hand as he walked up the ramp. Josh dropped his gaze to the pavement. A heavy rock-weight settled in his chest.Stop it, he told himself. This isn't you. He shook his head. Strands of his dark hair flashed across his sight. He was the definition of role-model perfection. He was the King of the high school. He shouldn't be blushing a crimson peach over a guy he met yesterday.“Man! Tristan’s

Chapter Five: Straight A’s Straight Forward!

“Okay, settle in everyone. Now that every student has finished the quiz I handed out earlier, I expect no one to get under a C-minus. Understand?” The teacher’s sharp voice echoed through the room. Suddenly, a burst of chuckling broke the silence and caught everyone’s attention. The air in the room smelled like nostalgic chalk dust and old paper. Josh turned his head to find the source of the noise. His face looked different today. His black glasses were gone and replaced by contacts that gave him a sharp and unfiltered view of the world. No more blurry edges. No more hiding. He spotted the boy immediately. He had his headphones on, and another chuckle escaped his throat as he looked at his phone. The teacher sighed and slapped a yellow wooden ruler against her desk. It made a loud crack that served its purpose perfectly.“Hey!” Josh shouted. His voice was a demanding blade that cut through the noise. The boy’s attention snapped upward. The pure expression of laughter was instantly re

Chapter Six: Nathan’s Basically Trouble, Hello And Goodbye

It was not what Josh had expected over the past moments of his life as a hand clung onto his shoulder. The touch sent every part of his body rigid. He could not tell anyone about how his father would treat him brutally.“Are you fine?” It was Thomas’s sharp voice behind him.Josh turned around and plastered on a fake smile that he had always felt inside the knots of his mind.“Yes, I’m fine.” He replied in his soft baritone voice which brought an ease of easiness to the friend in front of him.“Come on. Lunch?” Thomas said while giving Josh a warm smirk. Both of them started walking away from the lockers of hell and their footsteps echoed behind them. Both of them sat at their desks. They looked like they were the kings of heavenly clouds just by sitting there.Spaghetti was on Thomas’s plate and its aroma circularized in Thomas's senses.Meanwhile Josh sipped his water as his notebook stayed laid on the table. He was calculating the variability of the points that he committed to and

Chapter Seven: Principle Trouble

Josh entered the hallway, but to his surprise, his hand went weak, as if he were carrying a heavy burden. As he spotted the swarming bees of students—who looked remarkably familiar to him—he straightened his posture. He made sure that everything was perfect: his eyes were steady, his hair was immaculate, and his expression was cold and composed. He stepped forward toward the group of students who were trying to get information from him. A girl stepped out from behind her classmates to speak to him."Hi, may I know who the student council president is at this school?" she asked.Josh perked up. He was, after all, the president. He expected the students to ask him about the prestige of the position or the weight of his responsibilities."Um, I can assure you that you are speaking directly to the president himself," he said, giving the girl a sharp wink. Her face lit up with joy, and a faint crimson blush crept up her cheeks."Sorry, I didn't know, Mr. President."Her voice was soft and

Chapter Eight: Manipulation Power

The sun was defeated by the moon as it spread its wings, covering the area of Josh’s neighborhood in a bruised, light-dark glow.He leaned his back against the massive, metallic white gateway of his house. The bag on his shoulder was protected by his iron grip, his knuckles white and his veins nearly popping through his skin.“Where is he?” he muttered under his breath, a puff of cold air escaping his mouth. He didn't want to raise his hand to check the time on his watch. His posture was stiff, and his throat eagerly inhaled the freezing air, desperate for something to ground him. The night’s coolness felt vulnerable, totally constrained by the atmosphere that held it in chains. His eyes dropped to the street as a car growled onto the road, the sound rapidly shattering the silence around him.His heart was stable. It wasn’t beating for Tristan. He made sure of that as he firmly crossed his fingers behind his back. The red car stopped in front of him. The sound of the tires fleeted awa

Chapter Nine: Cousin Savior

Therefore, he thought, everything would end here—but to his surprise, hard, cold skin pressed against his back, saving him from falling onto the sharp mouth of the tiles.Josh’s eyes were glued shut.“Are you fine?” A familiar voice cut through the closet of his mind. His lids unlocked. His hands were sweating, and his foot felt like a rock against the slippery droplets of water. It was Nathan, the one who had saved him from the fall. The strands of Nathan’s wolf-cut hair made a glorious entrance into Josh’s vision.“Hey man, get off!” Tristan yelled.Josh regained his composure, though his throat was clenched by an inexplicable acid, as if a large chunk of fur had been shoved down his esophagus.Tristan grabbed Josh’s shoulder, his touch installing a loathsome, measurable heat that made Josh’s blood recoil. He was starting to feel the rush of his heart trying to jump out of his body. Now he was behind Tristan. The scent of Tristan’s body flew toward his senses. Sunflower perfume?“Ma

Chapter Ten: Never Ever Make Him Angry

Tristan tapped his pen rhythmically against the heavy textbook they were supposed to be sharing. Across from him, Josh looked like he was seconds away from landing a punch right in Tristan’s face. Tristan was impossibly bad at this. He was a disaster at studying.Josh felt his stomach twist. Deep inside, his heart was chugging like it was trying to drown out the silence. Every time their eyes met, Josh felt his skin crawl beneath his clothes. It was a restless, electric feeling he couldn't shake."Tristan, you have to be smart about this," Josh muttered. "We are competing in the Math Decathlon tomorrow. You know that."Josh sighed as his dark eyes drifted shut. He leaned back, letting his lids feel heavy for just a second."I know, I know," Tristan said. His voice was strangely reassuring.Josh stood up from the bed they were sharing. He needed space to analyze the text and clear his head. As he walked toward the desk, his eyes caught on something sitting right beside the bed.It was
