POV: Xavier I spotted it the second I came in.Raymond had his arms around Nichole. Nichole's hands were on his chest. They were holding each other right in the center of the living room that I had paid for and the house I had arranged in order to keep her safe. I didn't move forward.Everything in me was silent. "Xavier." Nichole immediately got away from him and with her eyes she called to me. "This isn't what it seems like."I looked at her… then looked at Raymond… and then again at her. "Then describe it to me, " I said."He had just come in. The door was open and he…..”“She's telling the truth, " Raymond concurred.Slowly I faced him. "I don't recall asking you anything." Then without a blink, Raymond kept looking into my eyes. That's just like Raymond he never lacked self-assurance, even when he really shouldn't have had it.Again, I looked at Nichole. "After all the things that he did to you, " I said softly. "And in the end you even allowed him to come here?""I didn't giv

POV: XavierMom was sitting in the living room when I got there. She was in her usual chair next to the window, with reading glasses on and a cup of tea on the small table next to her. The TV was on but very low as the evening news was playing. How perfectly she portrayed a woman totally in control of her life. She noticed my presence immediately and looked up. "You came Xavier, " she said, not only seeing the changes in my face but also reading them totally. She paused in the process of reading a while.Without any overreactions I dropped my words. "Mom, I'm getting married to Mira."There was absolute silence in the room. My mother removed her spectacles as she carefully, even deliberately, placed them on the book, then she looked at me completely. "Repeat that, " she requested."You heard me, Mother." She went over and sat in the chair. "Xavier?" She whispered as her voice was very weak, as if she had lost trust in the one whom she was speaking to. She took a long breath and conti

POV: NicholeI held my breath the entire time until we were halfway down the road before exhaling. The gate behind us had closed long ago. Though, Xavier's house was still in my sight if I turned around but I wasn't going to turn around. I had decided not to look back the moment I walked away and I was sticking to it.Evelyn didn't speak a word since we left. She only walked beside me, with her arm linked in mine, calm and quiet, giving me the choice to break down or stay strong whichever one I wanted. I decided to stay strong. At least for now. "I am fine, " I said, mostly to myself."It's okay, " Evelyn said, with a voice that showed she was ready to wait however long it would take for me to say it genuinely. After a moment of silence, we continued to walk. It was peaceful with hardly any cars or people around, and the breeze was gently touching my cheeks. I was mainly operating on autopilot breathing, walking, and picturing how Mira's hand was holding Xavier's in a way that looked

POV: NicholeI really wasn't up to anything worthwhile. That's why the times that you get completely overwhelmed, they're probably the last moments you think it's going to happen to you. I was sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea on the table, the light from the TV just shining in a corner. Though I was not really interested in the evening program today but being present like one does when they're tired of trying to sleep. Then the news came from the presenter.."We are pleased to reveal to you tonight that Xavier Harrington, the CEO of the Harrington Group, is going to make his engagement to Mira Caldwell public at a private dinner this weekend. According to most sources, the two families have been looking forward to this union for a long time..."My hand froze on the armrest.Without a second thought, the presenter proceeded with the next news item as if she hadn't just thrown a bomb into my heart.I remained motionless, staring at the screen. It was one thing to see it happen at

I had looked forward to a night like this for a very long time. The sitting room felt cosy, the champagne glasses were filled, and Mira was right there in front of me. She resembled the very woman I had always wished for my son, in all her glory. She was calm and sophisticated from a good family, with the right connections and the right understanding of what carrying the Harrington name meant.I held up my glass and our eyes met."Things are finally coming together, " I said.Mira's lips curved in a smile as she gently tipped her glass against mine. "Yes, at last."We gulped down the bubbly.Setting my glass aside, I reclined in my chair with the special delight of a woman who has strategized over a period of time and is now witnessing her plans unfold exactly the way she expected."Guess who came through this morning?" I said. "Sir Edmund Harrington himself”. Mira's glance momentarily betrayed her. "And Gerald Finch. The JohnWell’s family from Chicago and The Caldwell cousins from L
