Hollow Throne のすべてのチャプター: チャプター 71 - チャプター 80

Her mother made eggs.Nora registered this as significant because her mother only made eggs on mornings when she understood that the people in her kitchen were going to need sustaining for something serious, and she moved around them at the stove with the efficiency of someone who had decided not to be in the way of whatever was about to happen while also ensuring it had a proper foundation. The documents were on the kitchen table.Caspian had carried them in from the bag eight folios, carefully sleeved, the kind of archival handling that indicated he'd understood their condition before he'd understood their content. He arranged them in chronological order based on the notation marks Felix had added to each sleeve. The oldest was at the top.Nora sat across from him with her notebook. Her mother put eggs and bread on the table between them and then went to the window with her own tea and looked at the street below with the patient quality of someone choosing to be present without crow

The High Court convened remotely. This was unusual. Full panel votes traditionally required physical presence in the Court's primary chamber, a procedural standard that had been in place for centuries. Amara Maren had requested and received an exemption on the grounds that the vote was time-sensitive and the founding anchor's current location made physical attendance impractical. The fact that she'd obtained the exemption told Nora something about how much weight Amara Maren carried on that panel. They set up in her mother's sitting room at nine in the morning. Caspian had his laptop. Nora had the first four Vael foundational documents and her annotated notebook. Amara had arranged for the Anchor's Court to have observers standing in the proceedings, which meant Nora could speak if recognized but couldn't vote. The thirteen council members came on screen one by one.She mapped them as they appeared, checking each face against what she knew, what Amara had told her, what she'd read in

They walked back from the archive. Not to the car on foot, through Lagos, which was a city built for walking if you understood its rhythm, and Nora knew its rhythm in the specific way of someone who had grown up inside it. She'd asked if he wanted the car and he'd said no, and they'd walked out of the archive building into the morning sun and started moving through the neighborhood without discussing direction. He was quiet in a way she'd learned to read. Not the managed quiet. Not the working quiet. The kind that arrived when something had landed and needed time before it could be carried properly. She let him have it.The city went around them indifferent, enormous, completely unaware that one of the people moving through it had just discovered that his mother's family name was on the founding agreement of his bloodline's first human covenant and had been sitting in a public archive three streets from where that person's partner had spent her Saturday mornings teaching herself dead

The documents went back to work mode on Thursday.Which was practical Felix had the Vael secondary archive access, the six community registers were in transfer process, Amara was coordinating the High Court's provisional research access credentials across all five bloodlines, and the foundational review's scope had expanded enough that waiting until they were back on the island was not an option. The kitchen table became the working table. Her mother made space for it without discussion rearranging the area with the specific efficiency of someone who understood that work requiring two people needed a certain kind of room and she was willing to provide it. She moved her own reading to the sitting room window seat and appeared periodically with food she set at the table's edge without interrupting.Nora and Caspian worked through the remaining four Vael foundational documents in two days. The pattern held in every one of them.Stewardship. Consent. Community participation. The specific

She left the Vault. Not dramatically she set down her bag and she walked out because the room had become too small for what she was carrying and she needed air and stone and the island's particular quality of patient waiting that she'd been finding useful for seven months.Caspian didn't follow immediately. He understood, by now, the difference between leaving that required company and leaving that required space. She heard him say something quiet to Felix as she went through the door. She walked the Crossing corridor and pushed through the exterior door and stood on the stone path above the cliffs with the Atlantic in front of her doing its permanent indifferent thing. The island was doing its evening thing around her.She held it.A document a thousand years old had been sealed and held in private trust and left with a description of the person who would come to claim it. And the description was her.Not her name. Her condition.Someone who carried the anchor's standing. Who read th
