HARPER: “Put this on,” the head maid commanded, shoving a folded uniform into my arms. A gray dress with a white apron. Not exactly the glamorous undercover mission I had imagined. Then again, I was here to steal back my child, not walk a runway. “Welcome to the Banks household,” I muttered under my breath. The head maid narrowed her eyes at me “What was that?” “Nothing,” I said quickly. She eyed me and kept walking. How many hours have I been here and I already had someone mad at me? “Follow me,” she ordered, already striding down the hallway without waiting to see if I obeyed. I hurried after her. The mansion looked different and yet exactly the same. The head maid stopped in front of a door. “This is your room,” she said, pushing it open. “Change into your uniform and come back out.” A smile curved up my lips. This place had once been my sanctuary. It hadn’t been a room. It was a library. The place where I’d hidden whenever my marriage became too difficult.
