21. Mr. Fixer

HARPER: Alexander pushed open the door of the study and walked in. I didn't follow immediately. I stood frozen outside watching the spot he had just left. What did he want? The head maid's warning echoed in my skull. Never enter this room. Too late now. There were two possibilities I could think about. Either he knew who I was... The thought made my stomach turn. Maybe he recognized my voice or maybe James had recognized me after all. Maybe this entire thing was over. I had given him plenty of reasons to question me. Or he thought I had tried to kill Elias... whatever the reason was, both of them ended with me thrown out. The study looked exactly the same. Dark shelves. Floor to ceiling windows. The massive oak desk. The scent of leather and expensive whiskey lingering in the air. For one second, memories threatened to drag me under. I hated how familiar it felt. "Close the door," Alexander said without looking up. I pushed it shut. He was seated behind the

22. The Monster Under The Bed Was Real

HARPER: 8:00pm. It was late. Elias should already be asleep but according to the head maid, bedtime has become a battle lately. He was finding it hard to sleep. I stopped outside Elias’s bedroom and knocked gently. No response. A small smile touched my lips. He was either sleeping or pretending not to hear me. I pushed the door open. “Elias?” No answer. He wasn’t on the bed either. Where could he be then? I walked further into the room. “Oh my God, Elias,” I whispered as my eyes caught a small figure huddled at the corner of the room. Elias sat curled into himself. His small knees pressed against his chest. His face buried against his arms. He was crying. Something inside me cracked. I crossed the room in seconds. I watched his shoulders stiffen. He lifted his head slowly. His eyes were red. God. I immediately crouched beside him. “What happened?” He looked away and I softened my voice. “Hey, Elias.” His lower lip trembled but he still did not s

23. Four Years Too Late

HARPER: James stood in the doorway, his eyes taking in everything. Me on the floor and Elias wrapped in my hands crying. Rowena seething with rage. The atmosphere spoke for itself. “Perfect timing,” Rowena said and pointed directly at me. “Get her out, James” James frowned, eyes widening in shock. “What? Tonight?” Rowena crossed her arms taking a threatening step forward. “I don’t care how you do it. I don’t want her spending another day in this house.” James sighed, eyes not leaving me. I waited patiently to see what he would do. Of course, he wouldn’t want to offend Rowena but on what basis did he want to get rid of me? I had done nothing wrong. “Didn’t you hear me?” Rowena snapped. “Miss Rowena… perhaps we should wait until…” “Drag her out!” She ordered. “I won't be doing that,” James asserted. I raised my head to stare at him. The room went deathly quiet. Did he just say no to Rowena? “I work for Mr Banks.” Rowena chuckled, her blonde hair whipping across her should

24. Stolen But Not Lost

HARPER: "I can do whatever I want to everyone in this house." Rowena planted her hands on her hips. "Alexander is my husband. He loves me. He would never choose anyone over me or Elias." I glared at her. "Actually..." She waved me off, turning toward James. "Let's test your theory." James shifted his stance. "What?" "You were there." Rowena's voice turned sweet... the fake kind. "She just accused me of mistreating my own son. Is that true?" James swallowed. "I..." I curled my hands into fists. Say it. Tell her what you saw. But James looked at the floor. "Did you see me hurt anyone?" Rowena pressed. "No. But..." "That's all." She cut him off. Coward. But I understood. James's paycheck came from the Banks family. Not from me. Not from the truth. If Rowena wanted me gone, she could make it happen. And if I left... What would happen to Elias? Who would protect him? Certainly not Rowena. The idea was enough to make me sick. I looked at the boy hiding behind me. His tiny fi

25. Meet Me Tonight

Harper: The first thing I woke up to was a sharp sting that shot through my hand the moment I tried to push myself upright. "Ah..." the sound slipped from my lips. I looked down. The bruises Rowena's heel left behind on my hand looked worse... swollen, angry shades of purple and red spreading across my skin. Gosh. The memory of last night replayed in my mind. The confrontation and how close I was to losing my job when I hadn't even started. I groaned and dropped back onto the mattress. I hated how everything was seeming to be out of control.... slipping out of my hands and there was nothing I could do about it. What if Rowena finds out about my bluff? What will I do then? I placed my cool hands on my head. My phone rang on my nightstand. The sound made me flinch, snapping me away from my thoughts. I reached for it with my good hand. My face squeezed when I saw the name... Daniel. A knot immediately formed in my chest. Had something happened? Was Ethan okay? I sat up

26. Who Did This To You

Harper: Rowena. It had to be Rowena. I stood frozen in my room, the photograph still clenched tightly in my hand as my heart pounded against my ribs. She must have taken this after I threatened her. Did that mean she knew about Ethan a long time ago? No, if she had, why would she act surprised when I threatened her? It didn't make sense. But if it wasn't Rowena. Who else could it be? Who else knew enough to threaten me with Ethan? Who else had the motive and the resources? The note trembled between my fingers. The more I read the note, the more it seemed more threatening. My stomach twisted. The only sensible person I could come up with was Rowena. She couldn't fire me because of the evidence I had but she could scare me. She could remind me that she wasn't powerless. A lump formed in my throat. I couldn't stop staring at the picture. Although the picture was taken from far away, whoever had taken it had been close enough to see his face clearly. Fear crawled down my spine.

27. Closer Than Ever

Alexander: The nanny shook her head, eyes widening slightly like the question had caught her off guard. "It's nothing," she said. "I'm fine" My eyes dropped to her hand again. Obviously she was not fine. The swelling alone was enough to make that clear and unless my eyesight had failed me, there were marks on her wrist too. Faint but unmistakable like someone had gripped her too hard yet she sat there pretending nothing was wrong. I didn't know if I should be angry or impressed. If she wanted to take care of my son, she couldn't do that with an infected hand. Elias didn't mind as he was too busy shoving eggs into his mouth, not caring about the tension in the air while the nanny took a seat beside Elias, her eyes not leaving him. I turned to the other maid standing in the corner of the room, wringing her hands. "Get me the first aid kit," I ordered. The woman straightened, almost grateful to be anywhere but here. "Yes sir." A few moments later, the maid returned with

28. Banks Heir

Alexander: "N-no, it's not..." Luisa said, pushing the chair back so fast it nearly tipped over. Her cheeks flushed red like she had been caught doing something unforgivable. Before she could dig herself deeper, I cut her off. "It's nothing," I snapped, raking my hands through my hair. Luisa looked at me from the side and swallowed. The truth was I shouldn't have touched her. I shouldn't have held her waist. I shouldn't have noticed how soft she felt. But she had been falling, what exactly was I supposed to do? Rowena burst into laughter. She took careful steps toward Luisa. I moved to stop her but then James grabbed my hand and shook his head. Don't. His expression said it all. If I stepped in now, it would look like I actually cared about the nanny which I did not. Rowena grabbed Luisa's chin, the corner of her lips curving up. "Is that true nanny?" She muttered. "My husband said it's nothing." I rubbed my temple. A headache was already forming behind my eyes.

29. James

HARPER: “I will be spending the day with my son,” Rowena announced, smoothing down her lilac designer dress. “We need more bonding time.” My hands curled into fists at my sides. My son. Funny how she said those words confidently considering she stole him. “That’s wonderful, ma’am,” I tried to steady my voice. “I hope you both have a great day.” “Of course, we will,” She replied, rolling her eyes like how dare I think the day would go otherwise. I swallowed. I wasn’t worried about whether the date would go well. All I cared about was Elias… I just wanted him to be okay. I didn’t want anything to happen to him. There was no way I could protect him when I wouldn’t be there. My chest tightened. Elias finally came out of his room, putting on a black suit and white shirt. A smile curled up on my face at how handsome he looked. He walked toward me and stopped. His tiny hand slipped into mine. I looked down. His big brown eyes stared up at me. Then he leaned closer, his

30. Someone Knows My Secret

HARPER: Fuck. Why was James here? How did he know Daniel’s home? Had he found something about me? Was this the end? “Harper,” Daniel’s voice snapped me from the racing thoughts in my head. “We need to move.” My heart started beating fast… way too fast. This could not be happening. “Oh Gods” I whispered, the words escaping before I could stop them. “Harper.” “Oh God.” I said again, louder this time, laced with panic. “Harper.” “I heard you the first time!” I snapped. Daniel pinched the bridge of his nose, a gesture I was beginning to recognize as his tell, the sign that I was pushing him to the edge of his very limited patience. He stepped toward me, packing my stuff into my bag and pushed it into my hands. “There is a back exit. Come with me.” I was already moving, my body responding before my brain caught up. Daniel practically shoved me toward the hallway, his hand firm against my shoulder blade, propelling me forward. “Don’t stop.” I nodded. I couldn’
