HARPER: The silence between us stretched like a wire pulled too tight. Daniel's jaw worked, his eyes fixed somewhere over my shoulder like he was trying to find the right words. "Daniel..." I stepped closer. "What did James want with you?" He rubbed the back of his neck, pushing himself off the wall. I had known Daniel for a long time not to trust the words that came off of his mouth next. "It was nothing, really." He laughed, but the sound came out wrong. "He just asked me a few questions.
