The Girl He Never Knew のすべてのチャプター: チャプター 101 - チャプター 110

ELENA’S POV I saw the blade before Noah did. It happened in the second after Jax’s shoulders had already started to collapse, after the security radios had begun to crackle in the hallway, after the worst of the confrontation seemed to have broken. Noah had turned partially toward me, one hand still open at his side. Jax was no longer blocking the door. The threat had looked finished. Then Jax’s right hand moved. Metal caught the light and I screamed his name. “Noah—!” He turned toward the sound of my voice instead of toward the blade. The decision cost him the clean angle he might have used to step back. The knife that had been meant for his face dragged instead across the outside of his left forearm as he brought the arm up on pure reflex. Blood came immediately running down the inside of his wrist and dripping onto the concrete in dark spots. He did not go down. He staggered half a step but his feet stayed under him. The knife clattered away when Jax tried to revers

ELENA’S POV They took him through the double doors at 1:14 a.m. I stood in the middle of the surgical waiting room with the blood of his forearm still faintly smeared across my cheek and watched the doors swing shut. The nurse had said the cut was deep but clean, that the tendon had been grazed but not severed, that the surgeon was good and the procedure should be straightforward. She had said all of it in the calm professional voice people used when they wanted the family to breathe. I had just nodded. Then I had sat down in the nearest plastic chair and tried to remember how to do exactly that. The waiting felt familiar in the worst way. First, Ethan and now, Noah. At seventeen I had sat in a different kind of institutional room and waited for an outcome I had already tried to shape with a statement that cost me everything clean about my own name. That night I had been alone. No one had brought coffee. No one had sat beside me and said my name like it still belonged to a person

ELENA’S POV I was awake. I had been awake since. The apology, then the second apology, smaller. And then the three words I had stopped allowing myself to expect in forever. I LOVE YOU, ELENA VOSS. He said them as if testing the air. He said them again, quieter, as if the repetition might make the fact settle more permanently into the room. I kept my eyes closed a little longer. Not to deceive him. Only to hold the weight of the words inside my own ribs before I had to answer them out loud. They sat there warm and heavy. I had written versions of this moment in the margins of notebooks I never showed anyone. I had imagined it in the dark after the hotel room, after the rain-soaked gas station, after the train station bench when he told me to leave Ridgewood. None of those imagined versions had included the beep of a monitor, the dull chemical smell of antiseptic, or the faint dried smear of his blood still marking my cheekbone. I opened my eyes. Noah was already looking at me.

ELENA’S POV The morning of graduation arrived with no attempt to match the size of the day. I stood in the staging area behind the outdoor platform in a black gown that still smelled faintly of the plastic bag it had come in, the mortarboard balanced carefully so it would not crush the curl I had given up trying to tame. Around me the rest of the graduating class moved in restless clusters—adjusting cords, checking phones, laughing too loudly at jokes that were mostly nerves. Someone’s parent called a name from the spectator side of the barrier. Someone else practiced the walk in place, one hand out as if already receiving the degree folder. I kept my hands at my sides and breathed. Seven years earlier I had sat in a different room and waited for an outcome that would rewrite the clean version of my future. I had walked out of that room with a record and a reputation and a silence I carried like a second spine. The years between that night and this morning had been a long, uneven

ELENA’S POVThe call came on a Tuesday morning. I was in the kitchen of the new apartment, barefoot on the cool floor, watching the skyline through the wide windows when Noah’s phone lit up on the counter. He answered it with the short tone he used for numbers he did not immediately recognize. Then his face changed not into grief, it was if someone had set a fragile object in his hands and asked him not to drop it. He listened for less than a minute. He said “Okay. Thank you for calling.” He hung up and set the phone face-down on the counter. I waited. “He’s gone,” Noah said finally. His voice was flat. “My stepfather. He's dead. It happened last night and the call was from a rehab facility.” I did not reach for him immediately. I had learned, over the long months of recovery and rebuilding, when to step forward and when to let him find the distance he needed. He stood with his hands braced on the edge of the counter, his head slightly bowed. “I’m going to sit with it,” he said.
