"What?""Your place. Is the house still under renovation?" I asked."No. I mean—yes." Rachael replied hurriedly.I looked up at her not understanding what exactly she was saying "I mean, the last time I checked, they weren’t done yet," she clarified.I nodded and reached for my laptop. Since I hadn’t gone to the office today, I might as well work from home. Thirty minutes later, I unconsciously lifted my coffee and took a sip.I cursed inwardly as I forced the bitter liquid down."You don’t like it?"I jerked at the sudden voice, sending coffee splashing across my laptop. My head snapped toward the source—Rachael, standing just behind me.Ignoring her, I lunged to save the device, frantically wiping away the spill before it could do any real damage."I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to....""Never mind," I cut her off, unable to bear the pitiful look on her face."Why are you still here?" I asked. She flinched. "I can leave if you want me to. I can stay in a hotel for the time being."I froz

Chapter Twenty two

***Emma POV***A cry from Rachael got Daniel rushing to her side in an instant and catching her just before she collapsed on the floor.I watched helplessly as he gently parted her hair, searching for the wound. His face darkened when he found the jagged cuts on her scalp."What did you do to her?" His voice was ice cold."Daniel, didn't you hear what I said?" Rachael clutched his shirt with trembling fingers, playing the victim perfectly. “She hit me with a flower pot.”“That’s not true!” I shouted. “Daniel, please listen. I overheard her on the phone with..”"I was talking to my friend about our engagement,” Rachael interrupted, tears glistening in her eyes. “She must have overheard and lost her mind. She attacked me with the flower pot.”“No! That’s not what happened. Daniel, she—” The words caught in my throat. I could see the verdict in his eyes, he had chosen believed her instead.“Enough!” Daniel’s roar silenced us both.He rose with Rachael cradled carefully in his arms, her

Chapter Twenty three

I slid slowly down the door until I collapsed against it. What the hell is going on?I closed my eyes and forced myself to remember the moments before I blacked out.I had woken up desperately thirsty. There was no water in the room, so I dragged myself into the hallway. That’s when I heard hushed voices coming from the balconyRachael stood with her back to me, speaking urgently into her phone.“But there were no reports from the police,” she whispered. “Who caught them?” I frowned and drew closer, holding my breath.“I’m not paying another cent. The job wasn’t finished.” Her voice grew sharper. My heart was already beating erratically as suspicion filled my mind.“Well, Emma is still alive and breathing, so don’t call me again. I only want to speak with Enzo.”She ended the call and exhaled deeply before turning around. The moment her eyes met mine, she froze.“Who were you speaking to?” I demanded. She recovered quickly, attempting to brush past me. I grabbed her arm.“It was you

Chapter Twenty Four

A mixture of anger and fear surged through me, I turned back to the door and pounded on it with everything I had left."Is anyone there? Let me out?" I continued banging on the door till my strength gave out and I curled up on the cold floor. Every bruise on my body had reopened, sticky blood seeping through my clothes. My left leg throbbed mercilessly with each heartbeat. The pain was too much to bear coupled with the fact that my throat was parched and I was feeling extremely thirsty. "Please... let me out."I whispered hoarsely. A lone tear slipped down my cheek.Rachael had been right after all. Daniel hadn’t even given me a chance. He’d thrown me in here without a second thought. My hand drifted to my belly, and fresh tears welled up.“I’m so sorry, baby,” I choked out. “Mommy didn’t mean for any of this to happen. I’ll make it right. Just… please stay with me, okay?”I kept murmuring soft promises to my unborn child until exhaustion pulled me under.A sharp, stabbing pain in my

Chapter Twenty five

I lost count of the days I spent trapped in the storage room. Every morning, the guards would open the door and serve me breakfast which is all I would have for the rest of the day. Then at night, Mrs. Wilson would sneak in and get me a proper food, clean up my wounds and dispose the contents in the bucketI have asked her many times about Daniel but she said he hadn't come home since then. I've lost all hope, the only person I can contact is dad but the guards wouldn't even lend me a phone. I couldn’t bring myself to ask Mrs. Wilson for hers when she have already done more than enough for me and I owe her a lot. “How many days has it been?” I asked one evening, slowly sipping the warm herbal soup she had brought."Six days." I nodded. Six good days. Daniel, how can you be so heartless?“What about Susan?” I hesitated. “Does she know I’m… in here?”Mrs. Wilson nodded.Of course she did. A hollow ache settled in my chest. Had I really expected her to intervene on my behalf?“Ma’am!

“What do you mean?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.“I mean, Daniel and Rachael are getting engaged today.” Susan rose to her full height, a cruel smile playing on her lips as she walked toward the door. “I figured no one would bother telling you, so I came to deliver the news myself.”"I don't care if they're getting engaged." I pleaded in desperation. "Just let me go." "Not yet. You haven’t paid for what you did.” With that, the door slammed shut, plunging me back into darkness. At this point, I couldn’t cry anymore, my tears had run dry days ago. All that remained was numbness and a crushing sense of helplessness. The only person who truly cared about me was somewhere in this mansion, suffering because of me—and I could do nothing about it.My gaze fell on the crushed phone. I picked up the shattered pieces, turning them over in my hands. Even if Roland came, how could he possibly slip past the dozens of guards patrolling the mansion?I curled up on the makeshift bed and sta

More than an hour had passed since Roland left, and my anxiety grew with every ticking second. Most guests had moved inside, leaving only a few guards and persistent reporters scattered near the entrance. Many bad-case scenarios flooded my mind. What if Roland had been caught before reaching Mrs. Wilson? What if he couldn’t find her? What if they had both been captured… or worse? What if Mrs Wilson is dead? I shifted restlessly in the car not knowing what to do. Roland had strictly warned me to stay put, but what if he was in trouble or had run into some danger?I decided to wait thirty more minutes after that I will go and look for them. Thirty minutes passed within a twinkle of eyes, I scanned the area and noted the guards’ positions. With the party in full swing, most security was concentrated inside. The only safe way for me to enter is through the back door. I slipped out, crouching low and darting between cars until I reached it.I moved swiftly through the corridors toward t

Chapter Twenty Eight

***Emma’s POV***The backyard had been transformed into a breathtaking wonderland. Elegant floral arrangements, crystal chandeliers, and luxurious décor screamed wealth and meticulous planning. Daniel had spared no expense for Rachael. My chest tightened as I glanced toward the stage, where the ring exchange was about to begin.I looked away quickly, scanning for the perfect distraction. Right on cue, another maid thrust a tray of champagne flutes into my hands and pointed toward a nearby table. Seizing the opportunity, I took the tray and moved through the crowd. A second maid was approaching, her eyes glued to the stage. I timed my step perfectly and collided with her. Drinks flew everywhere, glasses shattering on the ground in a loud crash. The guests who were splashed shrieked in outrage. The commotion drew immediate attention. Guards swarmed toward us. From the corner of my eye, I saw Roland slip through the chaos, Mrs. Wilson safely in his arms. A wave of relief washed over me

Chains of the Contract

***Emma’s POV***To my utter shock, Daniel ignored Rachael completely, striding past her as if she were invisible. I glanced back and caught the raw fury blazing in her eyes as she stared daggers at me. She had no right to blame me. I had wanted nothing more than to disappear from their lives, but Daniel refused to let me go. We soon reached my old room. A guard quickly unlocked the door. The moment Daniel stepped inside, he froze. Curious, I lifted my head and looked around. The space looked nothing like the room I had lived in for nearly five years. My eyes landed on the framed pictures on the wall, and everything clicked. Rachael had completely taken over. In just a matter of days, every trace of my existence had been erased. Even the curtains had been replaced. “What happened here?” Daniel’s voice thundered through the room. “Sir, Miss Rachael moved in a few days ago,” one of the guards answered nervously. “What?” Anger sharpened his tone. “And no one thought to inform

chapter 30

***Emma’s POV***I brushed the painful memories aside and slipped into the bathroom. After a long, much-needed shower, I realized there were no clothes waiting for me. With no other choice, I wrapped a towel tightly around my body and stepped out.I froze.Daniel was sitting on the edge of the bed, his jacket discarded, leaving him in a plain white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He looked up, and his entire body stiffened at the sight of me.“There weren’t any clothes,” I explained nervously, clutching the towel closer to my chest. He rose slowly and advanced toward me. I backed away with every step he took until my back hit the bathroom door. He closed the distance, trapping me against it with his body. His stormy eyes locked onto mine.“What are you doing?” I whispered. His fingers tilted my chin upward. Before I could process it, his lips crashed down on mine. Shock held me still for a heartbeat—then his mouth moved with fierce intent. I pushed against his chest, but he didn’t bud
