She had structured the hearing to function with legal authority, calling witnesses and cross examining testimony before making a binding recommendation to the full board. Her sharp eyes missed nothing. Across from us, Martin had arranged himself like a king surveying conquered territory. Sterling, the board member who had sided with him, sat to his right. Delphine was in the corner, her face pale and drawn, her hands wrapped around a cup of water she hadn't touched. Ambrose was conspicuously absent. Martin had either decided not to call him or Ambrose had finally grown a spine and refused to participate. Either way, I was grateful for small mercies.
