Her knees gave out beneath her. Zara collapsed hard into the blood-soaked dirt. No. No, this could not be real. The world around her became muffled and distant. The survivors blurred together into meaningless shapes while the mutilated body before her remained horrifyingly clear. Alpha Tyrone stepped out from the crowd slowly. He crouched beside her and rested a careful hand against her trembling shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly. Zara stared ahead blankly. “It’s okay,” she answered automatically. But it wasn’t. Nothing would ever be okay again. Strangely, she could no longer cry. The grief had hollowed her out completely, leaving only numbness behind. “The wolves did this?” she asked softly even though she already knew the answer. Tyrone nodded once. “And our warriors?” Another nod. “All dead?” This time, Tyrone lowered his gaze. Zara inhaled sharply. The sound nearly broke apart halfway through. “I’ll be back.” She didn’t remember leaving them behind. She
