**Kaelen's pov**The sea was a flat, ink-black mirror, completely dead beneath a sky the color of bruised iron.I stood at the prow of my flagship, my leather-gloved hands gripping the carved dragonhead railing so hard the frozen wood groaned under my weight. Every small movement of my face pulled painfully against the jagged, jagged scar running from my left temple down across my cheek, a permanent souvenir from my narrow escape when Silas almost took my head in our last battle. The flesh had healed rough and dark, a constant, stinging reminder of the blood debt I owed the northern Alpha.I shifted my stance, letting my sight expand. Unlike ordinary wolves, my vision wasn't limited by the thick, suffocating sea fog hanging over the water. My eyes could cut through the grey mist for miles, tracking every ripple, every shadow, every hidden reef. And all I saw was a disaster. Eighty war galleys sat dead in the water around us, trapped in the narrow, rock-choked channel of the outer arch

**Elara's pov**Silas didn't hesitate. Without waiting for another word from Marcus, he tore open the weapon chest near the fireplace and strapped his heavy broadsword to his back, the dark leather sheath slapping hard against his thigh. His face was a mask of cold, lethal focus, the sharp angle of his jaw set like iron."Marcus, assemble six of the guard in the lower corridor," Silas commanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone walls like a war drum. "Nobody enters the archive corridor without heavy iron gloves and leather face wraps. Move!""Silas, wait," I said, rising quickly from the edge of the bed and grabbing my fur-lined cloak from the wooden chair. He turned on his heel, his golden eyes flaring with instant resistance as he caught me pulling on my heavy leather boots. "You are staying in these chambers, Elara. The archives are filling with that foul mist. I will not let you take a single breath of it.""I am coming with you," I said, my tone as hard and unyielding as

**Elara's pov**The heavy lead-lined doors of the lower vaults slammed shut with a deafening, hollow boom that reverberated through the stone spine of the keep. Four heavy iron bars were dropped into place, locking the corridor away, but the phantom stench of dead earth and metallic rot seemed to cling to the velvet lining of my cloak. Silas did not release me for a single step of the climb back to the upper sanctuary. His arm remained locked firmly around my waist, lifting me past the steep, winding steps while Marcus and the remaining sentries fell into a watchful, silent perimeter behind us.The upper keep was bathed in the sickly, grey light of late afternoon.Through the tall narrow windows, the sky looked heavy enough to crush the mountain peaks, choked by dense clouds that held no promise of fresh snow, only the suffocating, motionless cold that had settled over the entire northern reach. When we finally entered our private quarters, Silas kicked the heavy oak door shut and tur

** Elara's pov**The fire in our hearth had burned down to faint red embers, casting long, twisting shadows across the ceiling. Silas was asleep beside me, one heavy arm thrown possessively over my waist, his warm breath steady against my neck. Even in sleep, his wolf remained vigilant, his body radiating an intense heat that kept the cold draft from the window at bay.I closed my eyes, letting the heavy exhaustion of the day finally pull me under. When I opened them again, I wasn't in our bedchambers, nor was I inside the granite walls of the Citadel.I was standing on an endless expanse of glassy, silver water that stretched out toward a horizon swallowed by pale violet fog. The surface beneath my boots didn't ripple; it was cold, still, and entirely silent. Up above, there were no stars, only a pale, milky sky that shed an ethereal glow over the mist."Nala?" I called out, my voice echoing across the silent water. For days, my wolf spirit had been silent. Ever since the ocean turne

**Elara's pov**The mountain route had narrowed into a treacherous, ice-slicked spine of rock that plummeted straight into the black water below.I stayed tightly flanked between Silas and Marcus, my boots slipping occasionally against the frozen grit. With every step down toward the coastline, the deadened weight of the sea pressed heavier against my chest. Deep inside, Nala’s spirit remained coiled tight exhausted, split, and shielding the fragile twin sparks growing within my core. I couldn't channel a single drop of active earth magic to steady my footing without risking the dark pull below detecting my blood."Careful," Silas growled low in his throat, his massive hand shooting out to catch my forearm as a loose chunk of granite tumbled over the ledge, disappearing silently into the thick, oily sludge below. He didn't let go immediately. His grip was warm, his thumb rubbing over the leather of my sleeve, his golden eyes scanning my face with intense, protective scrutiny. He was h
