Gabriella's Pov I was home by seven. The cycle three report was open on my laptop. A plate of food sat outside my door. My mother had left it there because she had learned years ago that when I was working, I did not come down for dinner. I also did not remember to eat.I was halfway through the second section when my phone rang.I answered without checking."You left before I could give you the supplementary index for cycle three." His voice came through even and unhurried."I have it." I said. "Mrs. Ava sent it to my work email.""Good." A pause. "How are you finding the report?""Dense." I said. "The footnotes alone are longer than most of the main documents I worked with in Davis's department.""Davis's department works with simple numbers." He said. "You were wasted there."I did not say anything to that. There was nothing to say that would not lead somewhere complicated."What are you wearing?" He said it in the same tone he had used for the previous sentence. Matter of fact. L

Gabriella's Pov "Are you wet?" He asked."Yes.""Because of me?""Yes.""Say it.""I am wet because of you."The words left my mouth and something in my chest released. I had not realized I was holding onto it. The shame. The hesitation. The part of me that had been taught to stay quiet about what I wanted."Now move your hand." He said.I did. Slow circles. The pressure built. My breathing was not steady anymore."Faster." He said.I moved faster. My hips shifted against the chair. I could feel myself getting close."Mariano—""Do not stop." His voice was firm. "Not until I tell you."I kept going. My whole body was tight. The phone was slipping in my hand. I pressed it harder against my ear."Now." He said. "Let go."I did. The release hit me hard and fast. My back arched. My mouth opened. A sound came out that I could not control. Not loud. Just real.I sat there after. Breathing. My hand still inside my sweatpants. My eyes still closed."Gabriella."I opened my eyes. The ceiling

Gabriella's POVMy mom had laid out the good china. That was how I knew it was serious. The good china only came out for two things in our house. Important guests, and conversations my parents had already decided the outcome of.I came downstairs in a simple dress with my hair pulled back. I found the living room already arranged. Davis was on the sofa beside his mother, Denica. She was wearing the smile of a woman who had already won something. Rodrigo sat beside my father, Dimitri. My father was leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, looking relaxed. That was his business posture. The one he used when he was about to close a deal.My mother touched my arm when I reached the bottom of the stairs. "Come and sit."Davis looked up and smiled. "You look great."I sat beside my mother and said nothing. The conversation had already started without me. Rodrigo was talking about a venue. A specific hall outside the city with a garden section and a ballroom that held three hundred peop

Gabriella's Pov I looked at my father. He was watching Davis with an expression I could not read."You want to know why I have not slept with you?" Davis said. The room went very still. "Because the thought of you under me, pretending to enjoy it, performing for me like you perform for everyone else in your life — it does nothing for me. You are beautiful, Gabriella. Everyone can see that. But beauty without submission is useless. And you have never submitted to anything in your life.""Davis, that is enough." Denica's voice was sharp now. "Sit down.""No." He shook her hand off. "She needs to hear this. She has been walking around for two years like she is doing me a favor by being engaged to me. Like her presence in my life is some kind of gift. You want to know the truth? I could have married anyone. Anyone. My family name would have gotten me a wife from any family in this city. But I chose you because I thought you would be easy. I thought you would be grateful. I thought you wo

Gabriella's Pov The words came out before I thought about them. But once they were out, I did not want to take them back."Gabriella." My mother's voice cracked."You cannot mean that." My father said."I have never meant anything more in my life." I looked at him. "You just told me that my job is the problem. That Davis's behavior is my fault because I work. You told me I should leave the Castillo company. You told me I should stay home. You told me I should be tolerant of a man who grabs me and insults me and calls me nothing.""I never said—""You said enough." I said. "You said enough, Dad. You have been saying enough for two years. And I am done listening.""Gabriella." My mother stood up. Tears were running down her face. "Please. Do not do this. We can fix this. We can talk to the Castillos. We can push the date back. We can—""Push the date back to when?" I asked. "Next year? Two years? What changes between now and then? Davis will still be Davis. The contract will still be t

Gabriella's POVThe car was quiet. It smelled like leather and tobacco.I sat in the back with my two bags beside me and watched the city move past the window. I tried to stop shaking. The driver had not said a single word since he picked me up at the gate. He did not ask why I had been standing there with two bags and tears drying on my face. He just opened the door and waited. I got in.I did not know where we were going exactly. I knew it was Mariano's house, and that was all I had right now.Twice I almost told the driver to turn around. The first time was when we passed the street that led back to my parents' house. I thought about my mother's face when she let go of my hand. The second time was when my phone showed three missed calls from my mom. I sat with my thumb over the callback button for a full minute before I put the phone in my bag.I could not go back. Not tonight. Not with my father in that room having already decided what my life should look like. He was waiting for

Gabriella's POVI woke up to a room I didn't recognize. The ceiling was wrong. The walls were wrong. The weight of the blanket was heavier than my blanket at home. I sat up slowly and looked around the room. Pale walls. Dark furniture. A window that faced a garden I had never seen before. Then I remembered everything that happened. The fight at home. My crying and calling. Mariano holding me against his chest. The phone call with Davis. The way I had hung up without saying anything back.I pressed my hands against my face and sat there for a moment.I had fallen asleep on the sofa. He must have carried me here at some point. I did not remember that part. I only remembered the warmth of him beside me and then nothing.I got up and found a bathroom attached to the room. There was a fresh towel folded on the counter and a robe hanging on the back of the door. Everything was clean and simple and expensive in a way that did not try to impress anyone.I showered and dressed in the same clot

Mariano did not say anything immediately when we got back to the floor. He went into his office and I went to my desk and for twenty minutes everything looked normal. I opened the cycle four report and stared at the numbers and thought about Davis's face when I could not name a single person who would take me in. The satisfaction in it. The way he had built that cage so slowly and so quietly that I had never once felt the bars closing.I was still sitting with that when Mariano's door opened."Bring the cycle four notes." He said. Then he went back in.I gathered my notes and went in and closed the door behind me. He was standing at the window with his back to the room. I set my notes on his desk and waited."Sit down." He said without turning.I sat.He turned around and looked at me. Not at the notes. At me."What did he say to you." His voice was even."Which part.""All of it."I told him. The wedding date. The friends. Every person you think is your friend answers to me. The way

Gabriella's POVHe unclipped my bra and slid his hand under my blouse to cup my bare breast. His fingers found my nipple and pinched it hard. I gasped and arched into his touch. Mariano kept my wrists pinned above my head with one hand while the other worked my breast, squeezing and rolling the nipple between his thumb and finger until it stood stiff and aching."You drive me crazy, Tigrotta." His voice was low against my ear. "You have been driving me crazy since Vegas."I pulled against his hold on my wrists. "Mariano. Someone could walk in. Mrs. Ava could come back.""She is gone for another hour." He yanked my blouse open. Buttons popped free and scattered across the floor. He pulled the bra straps down my arms and tossed both aside. His head dipped and he sucked my nipple into his mouth, teeth grazing it. I moaned and grabbed his shoulders."An hour is not enough time," I said."It will have to be." He pushed me back against the wall. His knee nudged my legs apart. One hand dropp

Gabriella's Pov The office was behind us and the city was moving past the windows and I was on his lap trying to remember why that was a bad idea. His mouth was on my neck and his hands were warm through my clothes and I had one arm around his shoulders and the other pressed against the car window."You are going to make Vincent crash." I said."Vincent has seen worse." Mariano said against my neck. From the front seat Vincent said nothing. His eyes stayed on the road.I shifted on Mariano's lap and winced slightly. He pulled back immediately. "You are sore.""I am fine.""You are wincing.""I said I am fine." I shifted again and winced again and he gave me a flat look. "It is manageable.""I will get cream when we get back." He said."You do not need to—""I will get cream." He said. Final.I settled against his chest and thought about thirty minutes ago when I had been trying to button my blouse back up in his bathroom and he had appeared in the doorway and watched me with that exp
