Preparing for a Girl

A girl.I'm going to have a little girl. The thought is exciting. And terrifying."So..."Raven glances over at me as we drive home."Are you okay?"I turn toward her."Why wouldn't I be?""You haven't said much since we left the doctor's office."I stare out the window."I'm just thinking.""About?"I turn back toward her."I'm going to have to get used to pink and bows, aren't I?"Raven stares at me for a second. Then she bursts out laughing.I wasn't trying to be funny. But within seconds, I'm laughing too.Not the quiet kind of laughter. The kind that takes over your entire body.Soon, we're both crying and struggling to breathe."Yes," Raven finally manages to say. "You might have to get used to pink and girly things."I groan dramatically."Just promise me something.""What's that?""If she ever decides to participate in that human sport they call cheerleading, you have to bring me back when I inevitably die of a heart attack."Raven looks at me."Wow.""What?""Drama much?"I r

Reality

Going back to work after my first doctor's appointment feels almost surreal.I move through the restaurant in a daze, taking orders, carrying plates, refilling drinks.Everything feels...Different.The restaurant is the same. The customers are the same. The tables are the same. But I am not.The only thing that feels completely real anymore is the tiny girl growing inside me.My daughter.I keep thinking the words over and over.My daughter.I make it halfway through my shift without anyone asking if I'm okay.Which is impressive, considering I nearly drop a glass. Then I take a plate to the wrong table. Then I stand in the middle of the dining room for several seconds trying to remember why I walked there in the first place.Somehow, nobody says anything.I start to think I've gotten away with it.Then..."Rowan?"I turn.Mark is standing near the kitchen entrance."Can you come back to my office for a minute?"My stomach drops.Well...I almost got away with it.I follow him toward

Doctor Epiphany

Back at the PackLyall's POV"It's been weeks."I finally collapse into one of the chairs in the brainstorming room.I don't just sit down.I sprawl. My head falls back against the chair, my arms hanging over both armrests while my legs stretch as far out in front of me as they'll go.I'm done.Completely and utterly done.Mel watches me for several seconds."You are the picture of giving up.""I am not giving up."I stare at the ceiling."I'm temporarily accepting that this is impossible.""That's the same thing.""No, it isn't.""It really is."I sigh."Whatever."Mel shakes his head."We are not giving up.""That's easy for you to say.""We're going to keep looking.""We've tried everything.""Then we'll try something else.""Like what?"Mel opens his mouth. Then closes it.I give him a pointed look."Exactly.""We'll think of something.""When?""Eventually.""That's not very reassuring.""You're not exactly being easy to reassure."I close my eyes.I know he's right. But what am

Secrets come to Light

Everybody has been acting really odd at the restaurant for the last couple of weeks. It is almost like they are all keeping a secret from me.Something they do not want me to find out about, but also something they are barely managing to keep hidden.Raven has been just as bad as the rest of them.Somehow, she has managed to keep whatever this secret is from me at work and at home. I was positive that I would be able to get her to cave eventually. Especially once we were alone. So far, I have been completely unsuccessful.I have to admit, I may have been wrong when I said that Raven cannot keep a secret.Very wrong."Raven, I do not understand why you are keeping this secret from me," I tell her as she drives."I still have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.""Really?"I narrow my eyes at her."Because I am fairly certain that if you keep lying to me, you are going to end up sick."She bursts out laughing."Wow. Are you threatening me now? That is very low of you.""I am n

Baby Shower Fun!

I end up learning far more about baby showers than I ever expected. There are games.Prizes.Food.Funny stories.Apparently, humans have found an excuse to celebrate almost every single part of pregnancy. It is honestly amazing.Wolves celebrate the birth of a new pup, of course. Every new pup is important to the pack, and the arrival of a baby is always something worth celebrating. But pregnancy itself? That is usually just met with congratulations and maybe a few extra precautions for the mother.Humans, on the other hand, seem determined to celebrate the baby before it is even born. And, if I am being honest, I think I could get used to this.As I watch everyone laugh and compete in another one of Stacey's ridiculous games, I find myself smiling. My little girl is already being celebrated. She isn't even here yet, and somehow, she already has people who are excited to meet her.The thought warms something inside of me.Then, just as quickly, my thoughts drift somewhere else.Back

Presents

"Alright, everyone, gather around! We only have one thing left to do today!"Stacey's voice cuts through the room, loud enough to make everyone turn toward her."Presents!"I laugh as she claps her hands together excitedly. Before I can even figure out what is happening, Stacey is already rearranging the room. She sets up a chair for me next to the mountain of presents and immediately starts moving the gifts closer so I do not have to get up or reach for anything.Sometimes, it amazes me just how fragile humans seem to think pregnant women are. Then again, maybe I am the strange one.I am carrying a werewolf pup. I can probably outrun everyone in this room even while pregnant.Still, I decide not to argue."Okay, the first one is from me!" Stacey announces."Of course it is," I say with a laugh and an exaggerated eye roll.Stacey is a lot of fun, but she is also the type of person who loves being the center of attention. If nobody is looking at her, she will usually find a way to chan

Mark is the first person we have ever invited into our home.I suppose that says more about Raven and me than anything else could.Neither of us has ever really seen the point of having people over before. We have always been perfectly content with our own company, and when we wanted to see someone, we simply went to them. Now, as we pull into the driveway after the baby shower, I suddenly feel oddly self-conscious.I have never been inside a human's home before, so I have no idea what Mark might expect when he walks through our front door. What if he notices something?Neither Raven nor I is human, and we have both brought pieces of our supernatural lives into this house. Nothing obvious. Nothing that should immediately raise suspicion. But someone as observant as Mark might notice things that another person would overlook.I find myself hoping he doesn't."You two really live out here in the middle of nowhere?" Mark asks as we all climb out of our vehicles."Why is that so surprisin

Feeling Girly

When I get ready for work the next day, I find myself wishing, just a little, that Stacey were here to help me with my makeup. It is not a thought I have ever had before.Still, once it enters my mind, I cannot seem to make it go away.I stare at myself in the mirror, taking in the tired woman staring back at me. My face looks more worn than it did a few weeks ago, and no matter how much sleep I get, I seem to wake up looking like I could use another eight hours.I reach for the makeup that Stacey gave me and hesitate.Maybe I should try.Just a little.I eventually give up after staring at everything for several minutes without knowing what half of it is supposed to do.Apparently, I am going to need Stacey's help after all.Getting dressed is not much easier.Normally, I find whatever shirt and pants are closest to the closet door, make sure they are clean, and throw them on. I have never cared much about what I wear. As long as it is comfortable and allows me to move freely, I am h

Family Secrets

Back at the PackLyall's POV"There has to be a doctor we missed."River's voice pulls me from the list in front of me."Maybe one we dismissed too quickly."I look down at the pages spread across the table. It has been weeks since we first realized that Rowan would eventually need a doctor. Weeks of searching. Weeks of calling. Weeks of carefully worded questions and even more carefully guarded answers. And still...Nothing.Either the doctors we have contacted know nothing about Rowan, or they are doing an incredibly good job of keeping their mouths shut.At this point, I am starting to believe it might be the second one."We're going to have to go through the entire list again," I say, rubbing both hands over my face.Mel and Troy groan simultaneously.I shoot them both a look."Seriously?""We've already gone through those lists," Mel complains."Yes. And we clearly missed something.""Or she never saw any of them," Troy points out.I glare at him."That is not helping."He immedi

Camping Spots

"So, where all are you taking me?" I ask nervously as I enter Mark's truck."Well, there are a few different camping spots that I know of. I figured it would be best if you got the chance to see them all in person before you pick one." He tells me.I never expected to feel nervous just getting into somebody's truck but this entire day seems like a lot of firsts for me. I have never went somewhere alone with a guy unless it was Lyall, and even then we were always somewhere public. I have never gotten into a truck like his. I have also never went anywhere with someone besides Raven since I found out that I am pregnant. Heck, when I look at it, I have never been in a vehicle with a human either. I have no idea what to expect today with all of these firsts. What else could happen that I am not expecting? How do I even act?"Are you okay over there?" Mark asks me once we settle in."What? Oh, yeah. Just not used to doing something like this." I admit."Something like what?" He asks with
