Ember's POV"I did not tell her everything," I said.Knox was looking at me. The gold had pulled back but not gone — still there at the edges, still present, the wolf in him not fully standing down. He was listening. I could see he was listening."Rebecca was pushing," I said. "She has been pushing since the clinic. She knows something is wrong and she is not a person who accepts nothing indefinitely — you know that about her. She does not stop." I kept my voice steady. "She got one thing out of me. The timing. The connection to the night at the party." I held his gaze. "That is all she has. I did not tell her what you are. I did not tell her about the wolf or the hybrid or the building or any of it. I kept my word on everything that mattered.""The thread leads—""I know where the thread leads," I said. "I am not naive about that. But Rebecca is not going to follow a thread that puts you in danger. That is not who she is." I looked at him. "I know her and you know her and we both kno

Ember's POV"Tell me then," I said.Knox opened his mouth. And something in me — the part that had been on a concrete floor two nights ago and in a clinic before that and in a corridor outside a management office and on a pavement outside a supermarket and in every single difficult place this semester had produced — that part looked at him about to explain himself and closed. Not a decision.A reaction. The specific protective reaction of a person who has been hurt in a particular way before and whose body has learned to recognize the shape of it arriving before the mind catches up."Actually," I said.He waited."I do not want to hear it," I said."Ember—""I said I wanted to hear it and now I am saying I do not." I picked up my bag from where it had ended up on the floor beside me. "You have a reason. There is always a reason. There is always an explanation that makes the thing that just happened make sense in a way that is not what it looks like." I looked at him. "I have heard tha

Knox's POVThe management meeting lasted forty-five minutes. The same office as before, different official — the deputy head of student affairs this time, a man I had not dealt with previously who had the specific manner of someone who found sports incidents distasteful and was not going to pretend otherwise. He went through the account systematically. The witnesses, the footage from someone's phone that had already been submitted, the account from the student involved, the security guards' report.I confirmed what I had done without elaboration.Yes, I had struck him.Yes, more than once.Yes, I was aware that was not acceptable behavior at a school-sanctioned event. The sanctions came at the end. Suspended from the team for two weeks — Coach would be notified separately. Suspended from classes for three days starting immediately. A formal warning on my academic record. If anything of this nature occurred again, the conversation would not end with sanctions.I thanked him. Not becaus

Knox's POVWe sat on that bench for another hour. Not talking about the curse the entire time — talking around it and through it and past it, the way two people talked when something large had just been placed between them and needed to be walked around from all sides before either of them could stand in the right place relative to it. Ember asked questions and I answered them and she did not flinch from the answers, which was one of the things about her I had known since early on — she did not flinch from truth once she had decided she was going to receive it.When she left she did not hug me or make any gesture that suggested the gap between us had closed completely. But she looked at me at the end with something that was different from the morning, and different from last night, and I took that for what it was.Progress.Something real.I walked back across campus with the suspension still in my pocket and the conversation sitting in my chest like something that had been put down a

Knox's POVHer next message came quickly. Why didn't you tell your father it was Ethan?I looked at that for a moment. Then I typed: Because my father is not a person who receives a name and waits patiently for more information. What does that mean?I sat back on the bed. Thought about how to say it accurately without saying more than was necessary. My father is the alpha of our pack,I typed. *He has been running it for over twenty years. He is not unreasonable but he is not patient either — not when it comes to threats against the pack. When he decides something is a threat, he acts on that decision.* I paused. *If I give him Ethan's name right now, before I know what Ethan actually knows and what he has told his father and what his father is — Ethan becomes a problem that my father solves in the way my father solves problems.*The dots appeared. *And that way is not good for Ethan.**That way is efficient and thorough and does not leave loose ends,* I typed. *And right now Ethan mig
