Lahat ng Kabanata ng I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets: Kabanata 21 - Kabanata 30

Emma's POVI do not look back.I walk out of the Luxembourg the way I walked in, with Willa on my hip and Ace's hand in mine and Grey walking beside me at his careful pace, and I do not look back because looking back is not what I have decided this moment is going to be.Willa is watching him over my shoulder.I can feel her watching him.She does not say anything. She does not need to.Ace looks up at me at the gate."That man knew my name," he says."Yes.""How?""You told him."Ace considers this."Oh, that's true.""Yes, you told him first."He nods, satisfied that the exchange of information has been correctly accounted for, and does not ask again.Grey is quiet.Grey is often quiet, but there is a specific quality to this quiet that I clock and do not comment on.We walk. The café at the corner of Rue de Fleurus is open and warm and empty and I steer us into it because I have decided that we need something ordinary to do next and there is nothing more ordinary than hot chocolate

Emma's POVI wear the navy suit.I am not wearing it because of him. I want to be very clear with myself about that while I am getting dressed at six forty-five in the morning with Adèle already moving through the apartment getting the triplets fed and dressed for their day with her, and Willa watching me from the bedroom doorway with her rabbit under one arm."Mama, you look like the boss.""I am the boss."She considers this."The boss of him too?""The boss of the meeting."Which is not exactly an answer and she knows it, but she lets it go because she is still a while to being three and has not yet developed the full arsenal of follow-up questions she will clearly be capable of generating eventually.I look at myself in the mirror. The woman looking back is not the woman who once stood in a different mirror in a different country failing to close a zipper. She is not better than that woman, exactly. That woman did everything she knew how to do with what she had, which was very litt

Emma's POVAt first I just sit.I sit on the edge of my bed at nine thirty on a Monday evening with the apartment quiet and the children asleep and Adèle gone and I look at the wall opposite. I do not think anything in particular, because thinking requires energy and my body has decided that all available energy is currently being routed to the specific work of processing what I have just done, which is sit across a boardroom table from the father of my children and tell him his question was outside the scope of the meeting and walk out without looking back.I did that.I actually did that.I look at the wall for a long time. Then, slowly, I start to breathe.Properly. All the way in. All the way out. The kind of breathing that reminds your nervous system it is allowed to stop preparing for something because the something has already happened. He was different. That is the thing I did not expect to notice, and it is the first thing I noticed, and it is the thing I have not put down sin

Emma's POV Julian Beaumont is already at the table when I arrive, and he stands when he sees me, and I notice this immediately because it is such a simple thing and I have spent two years in a world where the men who should have stood when I walked in were already looking somewhere else."Emma," he says, with a warmth that has nothing performed about it. "Thank you for making time.""Your father once read page eleven of a restructuring plan and looked at you like the world had rearranged itself," I reply, sitting down. "The least I could do was have coffee with his son."Something moves in his face. Surprise, maybe, that I remember the detail."He still talks about that particular page eleven," Julian says. "He has told the story so many times that I think he has started to believe he wrote it himself."I laugh. The real kind. The kind that arrives before I have time to decide whether I am going to allow it, and it feels like something loosening in my chest that I did not know was tig

Emma's POVJulian pulls out my chair without making a production of it, and I sit down in the warm corner of a restaurant near the Palais Royal, and for the first time in two years I let myself settle into a table across from a man without checking the exits. The candlelight is soft. The music is low enough to talk over and quiet enough to hear each other properly. Julian orders wine that he does not perform ordering. He asks the waiter one question about the fish and listens to the answer with the specific attention of a man who genuinely wants to know rather than a man who wants to be seen asking.I watch him do all of this and I think, this is what it looks like when a man does not need the room to notice him.We talk about small things first. The Beaumont factory. His sandwich habit in two cities. The specific chaos of running a family company where his father still believes email is a temporary trend that will pass. He makes me laugh three times before the appetiser arrives, and e
