Elias Vale PovThe last room they had to keep him was collapsing under their feet.I moved with the center group as the first light touched the high ridges. The night had given the captors no clean way out. Our lines had held every path we could reach. The pressure was constant now, and it was beginning to break their timing. The silence in the bond remained absolute, but the trail of mistakes they were leaving had become impossible to ignore.Kael walked a few steps ahead, voice low as he checked the teams. The small shirts and cloth scraps in my pack felt heavier than they should have. Each one was proof that Rowan had been carried across this ground. Each one was also a reminder of how many times we had been close and still missed him.Riven’s report came from the upper left. “Movement on the spine. They’re trying to push north before the light gets stronger. Three adults, one carrying.”Kael answered at once. “Pin them. No space to turn.”We climbed hard. The rock was steep and b

Elias Vale PovIf we got too close, they were to show us a body. And end the hunt forever. The words on the cloth stayed in my mind long after Riven folded it away. *Prepared remains.* Not a threat to kill Rowan if we closed in. A plan to make us believe he was already dead so we would stop looking. The silence in the bond suddenly felt different—less like simple distance and more like something that could be used against us.Kael stood beside me on the ledge, staring into the dark fold of rock where the last adult and our son were trapped. His voice was low and hard.“They have a body ready, or the means to make one look real enough. If we push straight in and they use it, the search ends. The story becomes truth in every territory that already wants to believe it.”I closed my hand around the strap of my pack. “Then we do not give them the chance to use it cleanly. We take them before they can stage anything.”Kael nodded once. “We change the final approach. No single direction.

Elias Vale PovThey were building a body for us to find, one piece at a time, and daring us to follow it to the end.I stood in the thin stand of trees with the newest pieces of stained cloth in my hands. The sock. The second scrap. The lock of hair. Each one carried Rowan’s scent mixed with something darker. The man we had taken refused to say whether the blood was from a wound or from something final. He only smiled and told us the remains would be waiting.Kael finished giving orders to the teams and came to stand beside me. The silence in the bond felt heavier than it had in days. Not just empty. Directed. As if the people ahead of us were using that silence as part of the lie.“They’re leading us,” Kael said. “Every piece is placed where we have to see it. If we follow the remains, we walk the path they chose. If we ignore them, we risk missing the real trail.”“I know.” I folded the cloth carefully and placed it with the others. “But we can’t pretend we didn’t find them. And we

Elias Vale PovThe hunt that was supposed to die in this place was still alive.I stood in the sheltered fold with the empty bundle open on the rock shelf. The shaped cloths that had given it weight and form lay exposed under the gray light. No body. No final proof. Only another attempt to make us stop. The note still rested beside the cloth: *You were never meant to find him alive. The story is finished. Go home.*Kael closed the note and put it away. Around us the teams waited in silence. The collection of stained shirts, socks, hair, and small soft pieces sat at my feet. Every item carried Rowan’s scent. Every item had been left to build a lie that was not yet complete.“They wanted this to be the end,” I said.“Yes,” Kael answered. “But they could not finish it. That means either they never had a body to give us, or they still need time they no longer have.”I looked at the empty shape of the bundle. The silence in the bond felt heavier than it had in days. Not only empty. Calcul

Elias Vale PovA single, fresh fingerprint in dried blood—too small to belong to any adult.I held the tiny wooden bead in my open palm. The print was clear under the lamp light Riven had brought closer. Small. Complete. Pressed into blood that had already darkened. The bead itself was still faintly warm from the closed dugout. Rowan’s bead. Rowan’s blood. Rowan’s print. For a long moment no one spoke.Kael stood beside me, staring at the same small mark. The silence in the bond felt absolute in a way it never had before. Not only empty. Final.“They left this on purpose,” Kael said. His voice was low and rough. “The same way they left every other piece.”“I know.” I closed my fingers around the bead. The edges bit into my skin. “But this one is different. This one has his blood.”We searched the dugout again, slower and more carefully than before. The folded remains on the shelf were complete—the last shirt, the sock, the lock of hair, the stained cloths. Every item carried Rowan’s
