~Eliza~For the life of me, I could never have imagined Peter doing what Aria said.Peter was the kindly old man that made me feel at ease only a few days ago. He wasn’t some philanderer who would do something as evil as what Daniel did to me.Right?I stared at Aria like she had grown a second head while I tried to process my thoughts. If she was saying the truth, then I had just discovered the other reason Atlas might have helped me.My life was more or less a replay of what happened with his mother. So was this his way of making amends? Or something else entirely? Like the inheritance. As if from a distance, I heard Aria say, “I shouldn’t have said that.”Blinking slowly, I refocused on her face, which was pulled down in a regretful frown.“It’s alright. I’m sure—”“No, it’s not fine at all,” Aria interrupted impatiently.I cocked my head slightly, surprised by the slight hint of hysteria in her voice.Wait. Was there something else she wasn’t saying? I wondered. Why should her stat

~Eliza~My grandmother was alive after all, so that was a big plus. After hearing the news from my investigator only a few minutes ago, my hands still shook slightly. I was standing at a spot, clutching a ceramic and staring at nothing.Thankfully, there was a lull in the onslaught of customers, so no one was available to speak to me.The man’s words still bounced around in my head. My grandmother was alive and well apparently. She was just in a remote part of the country that I had never even heard before.I should be happy, ecstatic even, but for some reason, my mood remained lower than ever. And I wasn’t sure my sour state of mind had anything to do with the news that my investigator would be needing more funds to pinpoint her exact location. On the other hand, it must certainly have nothing to do with my blue-eyed husband, who had not been home in days.My confrontation with Aria two days ago had left a bitter taste in my mouth and I had hoped to discuss it with Atlas. But short of

~Eliza~I can’t remember the last time I did this.As the club's throbbing beats and flashing lights bounced around my senses, I could help but think that I had never enjoyed myself as much as I did now in years.Possibly since Atlas and I broke up.He, by the way, still hadn’t come home, I thought with a small sigh.Atlas had no idea I was at this club, and he most likely wouldn’t approve, but who cares? Certainly not him. I sniggered in my head, even though nothing was even remotely funny.Quickly, before that thought process could drag me straight into the past, I shook my head. Turning back to Lauren, I beamed and kicked my feet like a giddy kid.I was on a high stool, but from the way my vision weaved slightly, it felt like I was way off the ground more than I really was.“Oops,” I mumbled with a giggle as I swerved dangerously closer to the ground.A hard hand clamped around my wrist at the same time Lauren darted forward to catch me. Confused, I twisted to follow the hand back u

~Eliza~Atlas continued to stare at me like I had lost my mind. But at that moment, all the alcohol I had consumed seemed to have drained from my body, leaving my mind crystal clear. I really had no liquid courage to rely on.I could feel his body still under my hand, but I was too focused on darting a look at Lauren and the other two women. The three of them were staring at Atlas and me with avid interest.Lauren especially had a gleam in her eyes as her gaze flickered from my hand on Atlas’ mouth to my face. I could literally see the realization sparking to life in her head.Damn it!“Sister!” I blurted out breathlessly, startling everyone, including myself.Oh, for fuck’s sake! I swore in my head, my mind racing at the utter ridiculousness I just uttered.Of all things? The only thing I could think of saying was that? Well, I already put my foot in my mouth, so I might as well commit to it. Here goes nothing.“His sister,” I said in a calmer tone, even as my heart galloped away in m

~Atlas~She turned me down. After muttering a short ‘no’, Eliza had pulled away from me and rushed out of the car. By the time I got over my initial freeze and entered, she was already locked in her room.Even after loitering outside her door for a few minutes, I couldn’t bring myself to knock and just went into my room too.Somehow, I wasn’t even surprised that was what happened. It did nothing to reduce the sting of her rejection, though. That, coupled with the discovery of just how much she still hated me, contributed greatly to my dark mood this gloomy morning.I mean, sure, a part of me understood why she introduced me as her brother that night. She probably just wanted to keep her life outside the cafe private. But still, a larger, less rational part of my mind believed that she did it to hide me out of her life, be it private or public. And for some reason, that made my heart ache a little. With a small, weary sigh, I rubbed my chest. My thoughts returned to the blasted evening
