Winter's povMy heart skipped against my chest painfully. Mate? I was Axel's mate? How was that possible? I've never heard a werewolf mated to a fully human....."What?" I breathed out, my eyes ripping from his to stare through the windshield, completely lost in thought."How?" I whispered out my thoughts. "I've never heard of a werewolf being mated to a fully human before.""You're right," Ashton said softly beside me, keeping his gaze locked on the road. " There's no record of a werewolf being with a fully human. My mother had never been, her parents were fully werewolves. Her wolf had just taken her time to reveal herself."I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to process everything. From what I knew about werewolves and their mates is that they find them at eighteen.....which means the moment Axel and I met each other he knew.Is that why I always felt so drawn to him? Always felt tingles when we accidentally touched? Always couldn't seem to look away from his eyes when I caught

Winter's povAshton visibly flinched at my words. "Winter-"No," I cut him off sharply as I yanked the seatbelt from across my chest. "He had a choice, Ashton," The click of the seatbelt echoed inside the silent vehicle followed by the zap sound of it going back into its place."He had a choice," I repeated, my voice shaking now."And he decided that he got to choose my fate for me."I shook my head, my fingers wrapping around the door handle."I get to choose my own fate, Ash," I pushed the door open and climbed out before he could stop me."Winter!" Ashton called after me.I barely made it two steps before his door slammed shut behind him. He hurried around the front of the black car and stops a few feet away from me. "He didn't want to hurt you-"I whipped around so fast that he immediately stopped talking. "Hurt me?" I laughed bitterly, tears already blurring my vision. "Him choosing my fate for me hurt me, Ashton!"My voice cracked loud through the parking lot, I didn't even care t

Winter's povMy heart skipped painfully against my chest by his words. Ashton said Axel wanted me.But somehow...that knowledge didn't make the ache in my chest disappear. If anything, it made it worse. Because if he truly wanted me.....he would've given me that chance to choose my own fate.I closed my eyes for a quick second before letting out a shaky breath. This was too much to take in at once. I slowly shook my head, trying to clear the storm raging inside my mind before looking back at Ashton."That's.....". My voice caught in my throat and I swallowed hard. "That's a lot to take in all at once, Ash."He stayed quiet, giving me the chance to gather my thoughts."I..." I looked away from him, my eyes drifting toward the dorm building behind him. "I need time." I uttered and brought my gaze back to his.Ashton's brows immediately pulled together with worry. "Winter, I know you need time to think things through but I don't feel safe with you doing that here.""No," I said firmly b

Ashton's povHis nostrils flared as his claws flexed at his sides and then a dangerous growl rumbled from deep within Axel's chest, vibrating through the destroyed apartment."I told her she's your mate," I held his crimson gaze, refusing to back down even though Hunter was staring right at me.In seconds like I had expected, Axel was in front of me gripping my neck. He slammed me into the wall behind me and I can hear the bits of the wall where it had no doubt crack from the impact, fall to the floor."You had no right!" Axel roared, his voice no longer sounding entirely human.I gripped his wrist, glaring into the eyes of my brother. "You've said plenty of times you had yourself under control," I continued, rubbing at my neck. "Yet every single time you get near Winter, Hunter takes over!""I was fine." Axel argued but of course not even he believed his words."The apartment says otherwise," I gritted out and gestured around us to the overturned furniture, shattered picture frames a

Axel's pov"You really think showing up while Hunter is barely under control is a good idea?" Ashton asked from behind me the second my hand wrapped around the doorknob. My grip tightened until the metal made a sound beneath my fingers. Of course I knew he was right.Hunter was still too close to the surface. My wolf was still pacing relentlessly inside my head, whining for our mate.'She must be hurting,' he whined in my head. The words clawed at my skull.Every instinct screamed at me to go to her and to make sure she was safe and to explain everything. Hell, I want to beg her for forgiveness and I'd go on my knees if I have to.I closed my eyes for a short moment before letting out a rough breath."I need to see her," I murmured, my voice hoarse from everything that had happened.I knew Ashton only wanted to protect both of us. But this...was my mess. Winter was hurting because of me.No one else could fix what I'd broken. Not Ashton and not my parents. The only person who can is m

Winter's povThere he was.....standing outside my dorm room like he hadn't just shattered my entire world. Axel Storme. My supposed mate. The man who had known from the very beginning that I was his fated mate...yet never once found the courage to tell me. Instead, he'd watched me, ignored me and mocked me.My fingers tightened around the doorknob until my knuckles turned white."I knew you'd show up," I said coldly, my eyes never leaving his face. "Mate," I mocked, the word tasting bitter on my tongue. The title would've brought me joy if he hadn't hurt me so badly.I watch his jaw tightened and watch the way his Addams apple bobbed when he swallowed. His eyes searched mine desperately, almost pleadingly, and I hated myself for noticing how saddened he looked."Winter..." His voice came out rough, almost cautious like he was afraid I'd turn him away. "Can I come in?"I stared at him for a few long seconds silently. Every part of me wanted to slam the door in his face. He deserved it.

Winter's povI didn't think I'd do it. I didn't think those words would've come out of my mouth. But they did. And there was no taking them back now."You don't get to come here now and tell me you pushed me away because you cared. Because whether you meant to or not..." I pressed a trembling hand against my chest. "You broke me."Axel pressed his palm harder against his chest. I could see it in his eyes, feel it somehow through the whatever 'bond' we shared. It was hard to describe it but I felt...it.I felt his pain. And I felt mine. Both crashing into me at once.So painful. So damn painful."Win-He gasped in pain while his face twist in agony but I shook my head. "I'm doing us both a favor Axel. That's what you should've done," My voice cracked through the room. "You should've rejected me," I swallowed hard, clutching my own chest. "Problem," I breathed sharply. "Solved.""Winter please," Axel fall to his knees and the impact nearly had me wince. He looked up, his red eyes tearin

Axel's povMy heart felt like it was tearing inside as I stumbled out of Winter's room. My breathing is ragged as I dragged a hand through my hair. She had rejected me. My mate had looked me straight in the eyes and rejected me. And honestly.....I didn't blame her. I had hurt her even though I thought I was doing the opposite. Hunter was silent which was weird because by now he would've been clawing at my mind, demanding that I turn around and go back to our mate. But even he seemed broken and unable to find the strength to fight. 'We lost her,' he said in my head, his words heavy with pain. I clenched my jaw. 'I know,' 'You hurt her.' He said in a broken tone and pushed himself to the back of my mind. 'I know,' I whispered back even though I knew he wouldn't answer me. A few students turned to look at me and I couldn't find it in me to care. My chest still burned from the rejection and every breath felt like I was inhaling shards of glass.I had spent years convincing myself tha

Winter's povPanic made me go numb and my throat seem to just seize, choking the air right out of my lungs. The bag in my hand hit the old splintered wooden floor with a heavy thud. I swear I couldn't feel my fingers. In fact, right now I couldn't feel anything except the icy rush of adrenaline burning through my veins. The very dark purple around her left eye was nasty but as the sunlight hit her face through the cracked door, I saw the rest of her face. A gasp struggled up my throat at the sight and my heart thud against my ribs. Faint red scratches dragged down her neck like nails had bit into her skin and along her jawline sat a dark, unmistakable set of bruises......the shape of a hand pressed violently into her once creamy flesh."Mom...oh God, Mom," I whispered, my voice cracking into a jagged sob. I had never seen her this bad. Brody....he had never hit her this badly before. She looked like she was on the verge of collapsing. Hell....she looked like she was half way dead.

Winter's pov"He what!?" The word tore from my throat, raw and fractured. My mother's words echoed through my head over and over. He took her.....My baby sister, Sophia. My fifteen-month-old baby sister was with that man. And Mom let him take her.....My vision misted with unshed tears as the dirty room suddenly blurred. I felt like it was closing in as cold terror flooded my veins, replacing my anxiety with pure horror. "He took a baby? Mom, she's fifteen months old! In the state he's in?! How could you let him take her!""Winter, listen to me-" Mom's voice was a trembling whimper as she clawed at my knees from the floor, her fingers press into my flesh, hard but I can't even whimper. I can't feel anything but cold fear running through my veins. My eyes cast to her on the floor.....her pitiful state and I shook my head in disappointment. How....how could a mother make her child endure this without wanting out? Her lower lip tremble as she continue. "He's been better lately, I swea
