I quickly turned to Gina. “Call the pack doctor.” She immediately pulled out her phone and called the doctor. “Grandpa, I’m really sorry,” Leo said quietly. “I made you hurt.” “No, honey. It’s really nothing. I’m fine,” Dad assured him, forcing a smile despite the pain on his face. I frowned. He was clearly hurting, yet he was still trying to make sure Leo didn’t feel guilty. “Here, let me help you up,” Gina said. She helped Dad to his feet, and together, they slowly guided him toward his room while Leo followed behind them, asking question after question. “Is Grandpa going to be okay?” “Of course I will be. Grandpa is very strong.” “Really? So you will carry me again?” Their voices slowly faded as they disappeared down the hallway. I stood alone in the middle of the living room, watching them leave, and somehow, a smile found its way onto my lips.
