The response to Ethan's wedding email came four days after it was sent.Cara was having coffee with Adaeze in the faculty common room when Ethan's message arrived. He replied. Read it when you can.She excused herself and stepped into the corridor.Ethan.I have been sitting with your invitation since Tuesday. Not because I was uncertain. Because I wanted to understand what I actually felt before I responded. What I feel is this. A year ago I would not have believed I would be invited to anything connected to the Blackwood family. Six months ago I would not have believed the word connected could be used without bitterness.I will come. Not out of obligation or politeness. Because I want to.There is something I would like to bring. Not a gift. Something I have been holding for a long time that I think belongs in that garden more than it belongs in my possession.I will tell you what it is when I see you.One more thing. Your fiancée sent my daughter an invitation. Imogen called me whe

He arrived at Eleanor's house three days before the wedding. Not to stay. To deliver something.Eleanor called Ethan at half past ten in the morning with the particular quality in her voice that meant something unexpected had happened and she had not yet decided how she felt about it."Vincent Hale is at my door," she said. "With a box."Ethan looked at Cara across the kitchen island. She was already reaching for her coat. They got there in forty minutes.Vincent was in Eleanor's sitting room when they arrived. The box on the coffee table between them. Eleanor across from him with her tea and the specific expression she wore when she was processing something significant and had decided composure was the appropriate response.Vincent stood when Cara and Ethan came in.He looked at Ethan first. Then at Cara.Something in his face that was not quite relief but was the closest thing to it she had seen from him outside the restaurant."Sit down," Eleanor said to everyone. In the tone that

The alarm did not go off.Cara woke at six without it. Old habit. Her body not knowing how to sleep past the hour it had kept for years. She lay still for a moment. The October dark outside the window. The flat quiet around her. Then she got up.The kitchen at six fifteen was hers alone. She made coffee. Stood at the window. The garden below in the early morning. The rose had one last bloom in the corner. Dark and dense against the wall. She had not noticed it yesterday. She stood with her coffee and looked at it for a long time. Her mother appeared at seven. She looked at Cara at the window. Then at the rose."It came back," she said."One last one," Cara said.Margaret stood beside her. They looked at the garden together."Your grandmother's roses always did that," her mother said. "One late bloom. After you thought they were done for the year.""Stubborn," Cara said."Resilient," her mother said.Cara looked at her.Margaret almost smiled. Then she put the kettle on.Ruth arrived a

The reception moved inside at five. The October light had done what October light did. Given everything it had and then withdrawn quietly without making a drama of it.Eleanor's sitting room and dining room had been opened into each other. Tables arranged so people could move between them freely. Robert's rule about assigned seating observed without anyone needing to say so.Mahmoud's food appeared in the way good food appeared at good occasions. Without announcement. Simply there when people needed it.Cara moved through the room the way she moved through all rooms.Present. Unhurried. Not performing anything. She talked to Adaeze who had brought a gift that was a set of architectural drawing tools in a wooden case and had presented it with the directness she brought to everything. She talked to David who was indeed insufferable about being invited and was also genuinely moved which he managed with the specific discomfort of a CFO experiencing an emotion at a social occasion. She sat

The new year came without ceremony. They spent it at the Brixton flat. No party. No occasion engineered around a countdown. Just the four of them because Ethan had been there since the twenty-eighth and had not left and nobody had suggested he should.Eleanor called at midnight exactly. Not to say happy new year. To say she had found something in Robert's study while clearing a shelf. A notebook. Early nineteen eighties from the look of it. His handwriting throughout. She said she thought Ethan should have it.He said he would come to Richmond in the week. She said she knew he would. She rang off.Cara watched him put his phone down."A notebook," she said."From the early years apparently," he said."The Blackwood Hale years," she said."Possibly," he said. She looked at him."How do you feel about that?" she said.He thought about it honestly."Like I am still learning things about a man I thought I knew completely," he said. "Which I find I do not mind." He paused. "He keeps arrivi
