LENA’S POV I woke up in the hospital room alone. When I turned to my left, Dante was gone. When I turned to my right, there was only darkness. I tried to get up but winced in pain. I reach for the call button, but my hands stop halfway. I hear tiny footsteps approaching. I turn my head slowly, and standing in front of my bed is a little girl. Around 3 or maybe 4. She has dark curls and big brown eyes. She looks just like me but has Dante's eyes. “Hey, baby,” I whispered. My voice cracked. “Come here.” I opened my arms. The girl tilted her head, watching me. “Mummy,” she said, and the word hit me like a bullet. Tears burn my eyes. “Yes, baby. It’s me, come to mummy.” I push myself up, ignoring the pain shooting through my side. I reached for her and she took a step back. “Don’t,” she says and I freeze. “What do you mean, baby? It’s okay.
