POV: JaxonThe tweet was still at forty thousand when I woke up.By six it was forty three.I knew because I had checked it at five fifty eight, which meant I had been awake before six, which meant I had slept approximately four hours total and spent the rest of the night in the particular restless half consciousness of someone whose brain refused to finish a thought and refused to stop having it.My publicist had texted three times. His name was Derek Paulson and he was twenty six years old and my father had hired him sophomore year without consulting me and presented it as a practical decision, which it probably was, and as a gift, which it was not. Derek was good at his job. He was professional and efficient and he genuinely seemed to understand the landscape he was navigating on my behalf. I did not hold any of this against him. I held it against my father, where it belonged. The three texts were timestamped at eleven forty seven pm, two fourteen am, and five thirty am respectivel

POV: CallumI stared at him for a long moment. The rational thing was to send him away. I knew the rational thing. I could construct the argument for it without effort: he was my quarterback who had spent the first week of preseason trying to bench me, whose father had filed a background check on my family, whose friend group contained at least two people who had made my life actively worse since the season started. The rational thing was to tell him thank you for coming and I am fine and go home Whitfield.I knew exactly why I did not say any of that.I did not let myself examine why.I sat down on the step beside him instead. Left about eight inches of space between us on the step because eight inches felt like a reasonable distance, like the kind of space that meant something without meaning too much. He shifted slightly when I sat, not away, just an adjustment, the small physical recalibration of someone making room without making a production of it.We sat.The street was quiet t

POV: CallumI did not hang up.I should have. I knew I should have in the same immediate way you knew when a situation was going to cost you something before it had finished introducing itself. I stood in the parking lot with my car keys in my hand and the afternoon sun hitting the asphalt at an angle that made everything too bright and I listened.Richard Whitfield had a voice built for this kind of call. Not deep exactly, but weighted. The particular register of a man who had spent decades in rooms where the quality of his voice did work before his actual words arrived. Warm. Measured. The warmth of something that had been calibrated rather than felt."I want to start by saying something I mean genuinely," he said. "You are an exceptional football player, Callum. What you have built in two years at this program is not an accident. It takes a specific kind of person to earn what you have earned here."He said it like a gift.Like telling me I was talented was something I was supposed

POV: JaxonSaturday arrived without an alarm.I lay in bed for a moment after I woke up and registered the quiet of it. No six am practice notification. No film session scheduled. No calls to make or positions to take before the day had properly started. Just the particular quality of a morning that belonged, for once, to no one but me.My father had seven unread messages on my phone.I knew without looking. I could feel them the way you felt weather before it arrived, the particular atmospheric pressure of Richard Whitfield requiring a response. I put my phone face down on the nightstand and got up.I went to the closet.I had not taken it out in three weeks. The case was where I always kept it, standing upright in the back left corner behind the spare set of cleats and the box of film notebooks from freshman year that I had not thrown away and could not explain keeping. The case was worn at the corners in the specific way of something that had been moved many times and cared for con

POV: CallumI screenshotted it. I blocked the account. I put my phone face down on the kitchen table.I sat there for a while. The apartment was quiet around me. Marcus's light was off down the hall. The building was doing its nighttime sounds, the settling and the ventilation and the occasional car on the street outside, and I sat at the kitchen table with my phone face down and my hands flat on either side of it and I went through the rational steps the way I always went through rational steps, which was in order, without skipping any of them, without letting the emotional response arrive before the logical one had finished. The image proved nothing. It was dim. It was shot from across a bar in low lighting with a phone camera at distance and the resolution reflected all of those conditions. Two people in a booth. Shoulders touching. Looking at each other. In the absence of context it was exactly as readable as it was not readable. Anyone could say it was nothing. Anyone could say i
