Elara’s pov I called Mara Fenn from the office an hour later, after I had checked the building's other exits, confirmed the outer door was locked, told Petra there was a security issue and she should work from home, cancelled the nine o'clock call with an apology I would follow up on, and sat at my desk with Renn in his portable cot beside me and spent fifteen minutes doing nothing but breathing until my hands were steady. The phone rang four times. She picked up with the same lack of preamble she brought to everything. "I used it," I said. Silence. A different quality of silence than the ordinary pause between sentences. The silence of someone receiving information that changes the shape of a conversation entirely.
