EVANGELINE The doctor's words kept echoing in my ears. Aplastic Anemia. Blood transfusion. Without it... he won't survive. I felt like the floor had been ripped out from under me. My knees were shaking and my chest was burning, and the walls of the hospital seemed to close in on me. I shook my head again and again as if I could shake away his words and shake everything around me away, because this felt like a nightmare or some sort of joke. How could a perfectly healthy kid suddenly get this sick, in the space of a few minutes. "No... no, doctor," I whispered, clutching my necklace, not bothering to hide my desperation and fear in front of my daughter now because it was too much for me. "There has to be something else. Some other treatment, some other way. Please, don't tell me this is the only way." He looked at me with those grim dues, as if he'd had this conversation with too many mothers before. Then he adjusted his glasses and sighed. "Mrs. Moore, I understand how painful t

EVANGELINE MOORE Brent continued to press his power harder on the guards and I could hear their bones creaking under the weight of his Alpha aura. From the enraged look on his face, it looked pretty much like he wasn't stopping anytime soon. The faces of my guards were twisted in pure agony, with the sweat already pouring down their foreheads. One of them tried to speak, but his lips kept shaking as words fought their way out. "It's about the boy-" "Shut up!" I screamed before he could finish. The guard flicked instantly, silenced by my order even though their bodies were writhing in unbearable pain. I knew he wasn't going to kill them. Despite his anger, he wasn't going to do that in a hospital, not in front of a child. Their groans were getting louder now and that gave me second thoughts because the sound was utterly sickening and heartbreaking. I wanted to end their suffering but at the same time I didn't want him knowing anything about Trent. Not now. Not ever. But Brent st

EVANGELINE The doctor called me back just as I was about to step out of the hallway. "Ms. Evangeline." He called softly, and that's when I noticed how red his eyes were, probably from hours in that surgical room. "I don't know what history you and Alpha Brent share, but... you made the right call. If you hadn't, your child wouldn't have stood a chance. You should consider thanking him." Hearing those words felt like being stung? Thank him? Thank Brent? My jaw tightened, but before I could answer, I felt Tessa stir in my arms. Her little lashes fluttered open, her brown eyes half-sleepy and half-confused. She rubbed her fist against her eye and mumbled. "Mommy... where are you going?" I kissed her temple. "We're going to see your brother now, sweetheart." Her head popped up at that, instantly more awake. The Doctor crouched down a little to meet her eyes and then he gave her a small smile. "Yes, young lady. We're going to see him." Her lips curled into a shy smile and then she

EVANGELINE "F-uck, just stop!" I screamed, before slamming my palm on the wall, breathing heavily as I tried to make sense of what the hell had just happened. I leaned against the sink, still gasping for breath. My reflection in the mirror looked nothing like me at that moment. I looked pale, broken, and my eyes had a wild feel to them. I closed my eyes and tried to take deep breaths, hoping it would calm me down but my head was sizzling with thoughts. It was useless. I snapped my eyes open and immediately twisted the faucet on, waiting for a few seconds before I cupped the rushing water with my palms and splashed some over my face again and again, desperate to drown the storm that was raging inside me. I had no idea what it really was that had happened back there when he touched me. I tried to deny it, because I didn't want to feel that ever again. I splashed more water, but it didn't work because my skin wouldn't stop tingling with the sparks. It seemed as though they'd clung to

ALPHA BRENT But before I could get a chance to ask questions or do anything, she ripped her hand from mine as if my touch had burned her. We spent the next few seconds staring at each other, breathing heavily as the shock ripped through us. Her lips were shaking and her eyes were already glimmering with tears, but she didn't stay around. She turned around immediately and bolted, straight towards the bathroom. Despite a raging Carolina behind me, I didn't think at that moment, I just followed my feelings and the yearning that had engulfed my wolf. I found myself running after her, but before I could catch up, she got into the bathroom and locked the door from the inside. I stopped at the door, hands clenched as my breath continued to leave me in sharp gasps. I could've sworn, in that moment, that if I'd gone in I would have taken her. The want for her was so strong it overrode everything else. But the first few seconds stranded outside the bathroom made me think
