Chapter 2 Not him~EVELYN I lower my gaze to the floor."Your Royal Highness." I bow slightly, feeling my back tighten. This isn't how I planned my morning. And if I had known he would be in CrownFord, I would have never enrolled here.I could learn painting anywhere in the world, but not an inch close to him."Lady Evelyn of Ashbourne. Fancy meeting you here; I didn't know you enrolled in CrownFord." He says."I was enrolled yesterday." "I worry people might think that, just like before, you’ve chased after me across the world." He says, a smile playing on his lips."If you were the last man on earth, I'll happily remain a spinster, Your Grace." I bow once again and step out of the elevator as quickly as I had entered.I take a seat on the couch in the lounge, and I feel my eyes swell. After so many years, he was still hellbent on making me cry.Why would I travel across the world to chase a man I know how unworthy I am t

Chapter 4 All or nothing~ALEXANDER The moment I taste lilies and daisies, I know it is not Lydia or whoever was sent into this room to play Hockey's fantasy. A stupid game Brian brought up, and we play it every time we win a game.I pull back so fast that my shoulder hits the door behind me.Evelyn stands in front of me, wide-eyed and breathing hard, her lips swollen from my kiss. For a second, I forget how to breathe.Out of every woman in New York, out of every female student in CrownFord, it had to be her.For five years, I have imagined what kissing Evelyn Ashbourne again would feel like.It was never supposed to happen in a dark room at a frat party. While playing a stupid game of push and pull.I should open the door.I should send her downstairs, and I should definitely stop looking at her mouth, but I can't."Is there a problem?" The door opens, and bright light floods the room.Brian steps in, and Steve gasps, and

Chapter 6 Nevermind~EVELYNI close my eyes because, unfortunately, I was still standing straight, and the ground had yet to open and take me in."Are you okay?" She asks, and I nod."I...my cat died yesterday, and my mother called to tell me about it. I was so sad yesterday. I didn't see Kieran, though. Would you two be coming for the class?" I question, and Rose shrugs.Lord, forgive me, cause I have sinned. I didn't have a cat, never....."I... it would be in my best interest to take the class, but I'm very packed at the moment, and my mother thinks I should take singing class." She says with a sad smile.I didn't know she could draw and paint until this morning when I saw her with the nerd boy, Kieran. They can paint, and I thought they'd be joining the art club."Oh. That's... sad. I mean— you clearly know your way with a brush, but it's okay." We part ways as I head for Mr Shaw's office. After hours of thinking ab

Chapter 8 Never was~EVELYNThe benefit of having something in your mouth is that you'll have to say nothing, using it as an excuse; the disadvantage is that...you eventually swallow it down.Everyone seems to pause at the same time, and I look up to Vee with a warning look, telling her to drop it.She shouldn't have said that. If I had known they were all here at CrownFord, I would have enrolled in another school and saved myself the trouble of reconnecting from where we dropped off.... Although there's really nothing to reconnect to, we weren't really a squad.Just four boys who tolerated one little girl in their midst because she was nosy."Evelyn wasn't part of the squad...if that's what you're aiming at, Ms Farrow," Alexander said, and turned to me."She was more like a—" He pauses. "A little sister to us all, but never a member of the squad." He says it like he doesn't remember our past. Like there's nothing
