THE SIX CAPTAINSThe morning of the Magical Knight Trial arrived beneath a cloudless sky.Valeris Capital had never felt so crowded. From the highest towers to the narrow streets below, the city seemed to have woken before the sun. Banners hung from every major building, six symbols repeated across the capital: an eagle with spread wings, a roaring lion, a serpent wrapped in waves, a great wolf, a mysterious crescent sigil, and an owl with its wings folded over an ancient mark. The six Magical Knight Orders. The trial grounds stood at the heart of the city, a huge circular arena of stone walls, observation towers, and thousands of seats. At the centre lay a wide field engraved with magical circles. At the far end stood six enormous signboards, and above them, six elevated seats. They were empty. For now.Candidates gathered in groups around the arena, wearing the robes and colours of their families. Some came from noble houses and famous magical bloodlines. Others had travelled from v

CHAPTER TWELVEThe Power WithinThe first stage of the Magical Knight Trial dragged on long after Kevin had left the field.Candidate after candidate soared through the glowing rings. Some were blindingly fast. Some were graceful. Others struggled just to stay in the air.By midday, it was finally over, and the candidates were given a short break.Kevin sat in the shade of a large stone structure near the arena’s edge, his five-point Codex floating beside him. He sipped water slowly. His legs were still shaking. Not from exhaustion. From embarrassment. He had fallen off a broom in front of thousands of people.Twice.Technically, the second time had been a controlled landing. At least, that was what Kevin had decided to call it.Veyr disagreed. You fell. We’ve already discussed this.No.Yes.You fell.Kevin stared at the empty space beside him. “Can you please stop?”Several candidates glanced at him strangely. They couldn’t hear Veyr. To them, Kevin was just talking to himself. You

CHAPTER FOURTEENFinal StageThe arena transformed. The stone platforms of the third stage sank slowly back into the earth. The walls dissolved. The magical materials vanished. The battlefield opened into one vast, empty arena. The crowd grew louder.Everyone knew what was coming. The announcer strode to the center, his voice rolling through the stadium. “Candidates!”The noise faded.“You have completed the first three stages.”Three symbols glowed above him. A broom. A target. A fortress.“The first stage tested your movement and control.”The broom vanished.“The second tested your magical ability.”The target vanished.“The third tested your construction and precision.”The fortress vanished. He raised his hand.“Now comes the final stage.”The crowd erupted.“COMBAT!”The word thundered across the arena.Kevin’s stomach clenched. So this was it. The test he had been dreading. No targets. No constructs. No empty course.Someone would stand across from him. Someone who could attack

CHAPTER SIXTEENThe One Who Chose Him.........“There are no selections for Kevin Riven.”The words hung over the arena. For several seconds, Kevin did not move. The laughter rolled on. Some people whispered behind their hands. Others pointed openly.“He really thought someone would choose him.”“After all that?”“That five-point Codex didn’t help him at all.”Kevin stared at the ground, his chest heavy. He had imagined this moment so differently. He had pictured himself standing among the other candidates, waiting to hear which Order would accept him. He had pictured Arena smiling. His family finally seeing him in a new light. Everyone proven wrong.Instead, he stood alone.Rejected.The announcer cleared his throat. “Kevin Riven, according to the rules—”“Wait.”One word. The laughter died.Kevin slowly raised his head.Captain Orion had finally moved. The Captain of the Veil Order was on his feet. He hadn’t raised his hand when Kevin’s name was called. He hadn’t shown any interest

CHAPTER EIGHTEENThe Trial to Earn His RobeKevin stared at the black robe hanging from Orion’s hand.It was simple. Black fabric. A silver emblem stitched across the chest, the symbol of the Veil Order. To anyone else, it might have looked ordinary. To Kevin, it looked like everything he had spent eighteen years fighting for.A place.A purpose.A chance. He reached for it.Orion pulled it away.Kevin blinked. “…What?”“You haven’t earned it.”The words hit harder than any spell.Kevin lowered his hand. “But you accepted me into the Veil Order.”“I did.”“So…”“You were accepted.” Orion turned toward the courtyard. “That doesn’t mean you’re ready to wear the robe.”Kevin followed his gaze.Three people stood across the training grounds. They had been waiting. One was a young man with messy dark hair and an expression far too excited. The moment Kevin looked at him, he grinned.“Finally!” He cracked his knuckles. “I was starting to think Captain Orion would make me wait all day.”“Who
