My main criteria is seamless switching between devices. I might start a book on my phone, continue on my tablet in a hotel, and maybe even sneak in a bit on my laptop. For that, Apple's ecosystem with the Apple Books app is underrated.
Buy or load an audiobook once, and it's available to download on all your signed-in devices. The sync is instantaneous and flawless. As long as you download the title on each device over Wi-Fi before you go offline, you can pick up on any device without losing your place. It removes a layer of friction when you're on the move.
Honestly? The best app is the one that already has your audiobook library. Consolidation is key. I use Bound (on iOS) as a player for all my non-DRM files from Humble Bundle, downpour.com, or other sources. You upload the files via a web browser from your computer to the app.
Once they're in Bound, they're stored on the device. The developer is super responsive, and the playback features are excellent—variable speed, boost volume, a great sleep timer. For a traveler who sources books from many places, having a single, reliable, offline-first player is a game-changer. No juggling multiple apps.
A moment of silence for the apps that didn't make it. Remember when Google Play Music handled audiobooks? Or the original standalone OverDrive app? I've had to migrate my libraries a few times over the years.
That's why, for purchases, I now lean toward services that let me download DRM-free files I can back up myself. I don't want my travel library held hostage by a company that might discontinue a service. Long-term, my best app is the one that gives me actual ownership of the files I pay for, even if the interface is less polished.

Scribd calls itself 'unlimited,' but it’s a subscription service. However, they offer a 30-day free trial where you can download tons of audiobooks for offline listening. If you’re organized, you can binge a few books and cancel before the trial ends.
Their catalog is massive, mixing audiobooks, ebooks, and magazines. It’s a good way to test if a paid service is worth it for you, and the offline feature works perfectly during the trial period.
Look into apps specifically for classic literature. 'Audiobooks from 'Loyal Books'' is one. 'Classic Audiobook Collection' is another. They're basically front-ends for public domain content, but they offer a clean, download-friendly interface.
They're ad-supported usually, but the ads aren't too intrusive. The benefit is curation—you're not wading through a million podcasts to find a novel. It's all books, all downloadable. If your taste runs toward 19th-century novels and early 20th-century mysteries, these apps are a targeted solution.
A hidden gem is your national library service for the blind and print-disabled. In the US, it's the NLS/BARD service. If you or anyone in your household has a qualifying condition (which can include reading disabilities like dyslexia), you get free access to an enormous, curated catalog of audiobooks, downloadable via an app.
The selection is vast and includes bestsellers. It's a vital service with a much broader eligibility than people realize. Worth looking into if you qualify.
Honestly, I gave up and just use YouTube with a background play subscription. Not ideal, and definitely not a dedicated audiobook app. But you can find full audiobooks, create playlists, and download them with YouTube Premium for offline. The selection is chaotic but vast.
It's a messy solution, and the organization is terrible. But if you're already paying for YouTube Premium for other reasons, it's an unexpected bonus for audiobook listening on the go.
