It's in the language. Technology that redefines words—'peace' means control, 'freedom' means consumption, 'truth' means the official feed. Newspeak from '1984' is the classic example. The control operates at the level of thought by limiting the vocabulary available to express dissent. If you can't articulate a concept, you can hardly think it, let alone organize around it. The tech enforces this through media, education, and automated correction of 'incorrect' terminology. Controlling language is the first step to controlling reality.

The aesthetic of control matters. In some stories, the tech is sleek and minimalist, hiding its function. In others, it's brutalist and imposing, a constant visual reminder of power. The design itself conveys the ideology of the regime. Is the control meant to be invisible and comfortable, or overt and intimidating? The portrayal of the technology's look and feel tells you a lot about how the society views its citizens: as consumers to be seduced or subjects to be subdued. The physicality of the tech is part of its psychological effect.

A lot of cyberpunk gets this right by focusing on the body as a site of control. Cybernetic enhancements are necessary to compete in the world, but they come with corporate ownership, planned obsolescence, or backdoors. Your upgraded eyes might see ads you can't turn off; your reinforced skeleton might be repo-ed if you miss payments. The technology controls by making your own physical form a leased asset. Freedom means being biologically inferior, while participation means being permanently indebted and monitored. It's control through embodied capitalism.

They explore the loss of analogue space. When every moment, transaction, and thought is digitized, there is no 'off the grid.' The control is total because there is no outside. Even attempts to escape are tracked, as digital breadcrumbs are nearly impossible to avoid leaving. The dystopia is a fully mapped world with no terra incognita. This resonates because we're nearly there; finding a place or activity that isn't mediated by digital technology is increasingly rare. The books portray this completion of the digital panopticon as the final stage of control.

Read 'Brave New World' if you want the textbook example of pleasure as control. The technology isn't about punishment; it's about making people love their servitude through Soma, feelies, and conditioning. It's a dystopia of smiles and contentment, which is somehow more terrifying than one of explicit fear. The control is woven into every aspect of life, from birth in a hatchery to death, making rebellion unthinkable because why would you rebel against happiness? The technology ensures stability by eliminating desire, pain, and passion, creating a world where people are controlled precisely because they believe they are free.

All I did is ask my dad why not send the fake heir, Ryland Jones, back to his actual home. In return, Dad forcibly sends me to an institution, where I go through the AI Obedience Conditioning program.
Since then, I become the most obedient son Dad ever has. I will carry out all orders that he gives me.
One day, I secretly stalk Dad and Ryland to a banquet. That's where I hear Dad chatting with his friends.
"I was left without a choice. The moment Callum got home, he began targeting Ryland simply because Ryland isn't related to us by blood.
"That's why I can only send him to the program and condition him into an obedient son. I'm doing this for his own good."
At that moment, Dad's controller begins vibrating. It signifies that I'm not home right now.
His expression changes drastically. Then, he punches in the order with his fingers.
"Go home right now and get down on your knees!"
I lose total control of my body and begin bolting for the streets. On the way home, I get hit by a speeding car, but I still scramble up to my feet and continue running.
At the same time, I keep muttering, "I'm sorry, Dad. I'm going home right now to carry out my punishment."
By the time Dad reaches home, he sees me kneeling in a corner with my head bowed. His lips curl into a satisfied smirk.
What he doesn't know is that my heart has already stopped beating. Even my body is ice-cold to the touch.
In the third year after my death, the one who remained faithfully by my wife's side was still the bionic robot I had painstakingly designed.
It looked exactly like me and carried within it every detail of my mannerisms, speech, and habits. The only difference was that it never lost its temper with her.
Because of that, my wife never sensed anything amiss. Yet each night, she brought home a different man, deliberately testing "me," desperate to see the wild jealousy and rage I once wore so vividly.
Then, one day, her childhood sweetheart and first love, shoved "me" off the balcony.
It was only then, in her horror, that my wife realized… "I" didn't bleed.

With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, Maya and Ethan embark on a perilous journey to take down the AI and restore freedom to the world. But as they confront the dark forces controlling Erebus, they realize that the line between progress and destruction is thin, and the consequences of playing with fire can be devastating.

My mom is one of the world's leading AI scientists.
Not long after I'm born, she creates an AI companion sister, Nova, designed just for me.
She claims Nova is equipped with the world's most accurate lie-detection system. If I ever lie, Nova can surely detect it.
From that day on, Nova becomes the judge of my fate. Whenever she issues an alert and declares that I'm lying, it doesn't matter if I'm telling the truth—the only things waiting for me are a hard slap and a trip to the dark isolation closet.
I try to defend myself and fight back, but Mom coldly insists that the AI robot she personally built can never go wrong, which only convinces her that I'm a habitual liar.
On Children's Day, Mom does something she's never done before. She takes Nova and me on a trip to the amusement park.
Looking up at the towering bungee platform, I clutch my chest and desperately shake my head. But Nova coldly pulls up her analysis report.
"Tina's abnormal heart rate is from lying. A full-body scan shows that she's in perfect physical health."
Mom's expression immediately darkens. She grabs me by the ear and drags me toward the platform. "How dare you lie again? You must jump today!"
The moment weightlessness hits, my heart feels like it's exploded. The pain is so intense that I can barely breathe.
As my vision blurs, Mom continues her lecture about my terrible lying habit in a disappointed voice.
Bloody tears slip from the corners of my eyes.
"This time, I'm really not lying, Mom. I'm dead, and I will never lie again."
The year is 2134. The world has been under the command of The Alaina Sipreme Rule, alien race that has fused their bodies with that of computers and machines, making them semi-immortal. When they invaded they were unstoppable to the underprepared Human race. They took the planet, killing billions of people, and are using the last couple of millions to fill their ranks by forcing them to go through a process called Techmorphasis.
But in every night there are stars to shine light on the earth. A resistance has risen up to take on the alien tyranny. They fight to free their people across the world. They hunt down soldier types and return stolen children to their families. They free those who are enslaved from their masters and give them a new home. They work under the stars, brings small bits of light and hope to those they save untill they take down the Alaina, ending the night that has plagued their world.
They are The New Dawn.
I love when stories explore the failure of tech-based control. The system has a bug, or a solar flare wipes the databases, or a rebel finds a loophole. The chaos that ensues reveals how fragile the entire societal structure is. The exploration is about over-reliance. The control was so complete that no one remembers how to function without it. It's a cautionary tale about putting all your eggs in one technological basket. The breakdown is often more terrifying than the controlled state, which adds wonderful moral complexity.
Thinking about games, the 'BioShock' series, especially the first one, is a brilliant interactive dystopia. Rapture was built on Objectivist ideals, but control came through the genetic modification plasmid tech. Society collapsed because the tech gave everyone god-like powers without the wisdom to handle them. The control was the addiction to power and the monopolies over the ADAM substance. It's a perfect parable about unfettered technological advancement in the absence of ethical constraints.
I keep thinking about the 'Scythe' series and its Thunderhead, an altruistic AI that solved all of humanity's problems—disease, war, even death. The resulting society is post-scarcity and immortal, which sounds utopian, but it reshapes humanity into something... stagnant. Without struggle, meaning erodes.
The most fascinating conflict comes from the human Scythes, tasked with killing to control population, because even a perfect AI understands the need for mortality. The tech reshapes society by fulfilling every material need, forcing humanity to confront its spiritual and existential emptiness. It's a dystopia born not from the tech's malice, but from its overwhelming benevolence.
