It's all about consequence and constraint for me. If magic exists, why didn't it change everything? The best authors provide a compelling reason. Maybe it's rare, maybe it's dying out, maybe it's fiercely regulated by the Church or the Crown. In Susanna Clarke's book, practical magic is mostly gone, which is why its resurgence is such a big deal. The history informs the magic's limitations, and those limitations shape how the story can unfold. You can't have a wizard teleporting Henry VIII out of trouble because the magic doesn't work that way, or because the cost would be too high. The rules of the fantasy and the rules of the historical period have to negotiate with each other, creating a unique set of story possibilities that feel fresh precisely because they are bounded by this dual reality.

From a pure reading experience standpoint, the best blends are effortless. You don't stop to think, 'Ah, here's the history lesson,' or 'Here's the fantasy exposition.' The narrative flows, weaving details of dress, politics, and magical theory into the action and dialogue so naturally that you absorb it all without noticing you're learning. The author has such command over both realms that they present the world as a complete, self-evident whole. You're not visiting a historical setting with magic added; you're visiting a different world that shares our history's DNA, but has its own unique, fantastical evolution. That's the goal.

How do historical fantasy novels blend real events with magic?

I always look for how the author handles the 'butterfly effect'. If you introduce a major magical element into, say, medieval Europe, why does the timeline roughly follow ours? The best stories either create a divergent timeline from a point of departure or make the magic so secretive and contained that it doesn't massively alter recorded history. Others go the alt-history route fully, which is fun, but that requires even more world-building rigor to make the new timeline feel lived-in and logical.

How do the best historical fantasy books handle historical accuracy versus lore?

Can I be a bit of a heretic? Sometimes a deliberate anachronism is the point. I'm thinking of books like 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell', which pastiche Regency prose and manners but inject a wild, faerie magic that feels both of that scholarly, rational era and utterly alien to it. The 'inaccuracy' is stylistic, a choice to create a specific tone. The lore isn't historically accurate because it's mythological, drawn from older British folklore and re-contextualized. It works because the voice is so consistently committed. So, maybe 'accuracy' is less about facts and more about maintaining a coherent aesthetic and internal logic from page one to the end.

How do the best historical fantasy books portray real historical figures?

I tend to be skeptical. So often, it feels like a marketing gimmick. 'Buy this fantasy novel! With Leonardo da Vinci as a steampunk inventor!' It can come off as lazy, trying to borrow legitimacy from a famous name without doing the character work. A truly great portrayal earns its use of that figure. The person's historical role is integral to the plot's central conflict; the story couldn'tt be told with a generic lord or mage. If you can replace the historical figure with a fictional king and the plot still works, then you probably shouldn't have used the historical figure in the first place.
