Thrillers are always a safe bet for keeping a reluctant reader engaged. 'The Sane Psychopath' by Smarak Swain is a psychological thriller that's popular. It's about a therapist treating a patient who might be a psycho, but the lines blur. It's dark and twisty.
'She Swiped Right into My Heart' by Sudeep Nagarkar is a lighter, contemporary romance-thriller mix. His books are consistently best-sellers among college-aged readers. They deal with relationships, misunderstandings, and modern technology—topics that are immediately relevant to a YA audience.
For pure, unadulterated fun and fantasy adventure, the 'Immortals of Meluha' by Amish Tripathi is a phenomenon. It's the first book of the Shiva Trilogy, a fictional retelling of Shiva as a Tibetan immigrant warrior. The prose is simple, the plot is action-driven, and the world-building of ancient Meluha is intriguing.
It's arguably the book that kicked off the modern Indian mytho-fiction craze. It's a perfect entry point for a YA reader who loves adventure, mythology, and easy-to-read storytelling. The sequels, 'The Secret of the Nagas' and 'The Oath of the Vayuputras', maintain the momentum.
Romance is huge. 'The Zoya Factor' by Anuja Chauhan is a classic for a reason. It's a hilarious rom-com about an advertising girl who becomes the Indian cricket team's lucky charm. The banter is top-notch, the romance is sweet, and the backdrop of cricket mania is so authentically Indian. It's a feel-good best-seller that never gets old.
Her other books like 'Battle for Bittora' (political romance) are also fantastic. Chauhan has a way of writing sharp, career-driven heroines and witty dialogue that feels very modern and aspirational for young women.
For a light, funny, and heartwarming pick, 'The Ulysses Murders' by Namita Gokhale might work. It's part of a series where classic tales are retold in modern India. This one is a comic detective story based on James Joyce's 'Ulysses' but set in Delhi. It's witty, packed with cultural references, and the mystery is engaging without being too complex.
It shows that YA can be intellectual and fun. The 'Puffin Classics' series also has abridged versions of Indian classics like 'The Panchatantra' or 'The Adventures of Feluda' which are perennial best-sellers for younger readers moving into YA.

KRITI TRIPATHI

Is it possible for a cage to offer freedom?
A deeply conservative father, a mother resigned to the status quo, and the ghost of a twisted abuse have beat Kriti Tripathi into a numb kind of acceptance. The kind of acceptance that allows her to block out the uncomfortable realities that come with forming meaningful bonds with the people around her.
When her mother shoves her into an arranged marriage to a stranger, Kriti is forced to confront secrets that have painted her past black and surrendered her future to the demands of her possessor.
But Kriti’s quietly mysterious husband has been whispering things as she struggles to adjust to her new life. Things that make her think she might not be as trapped as she feels, and Kriti begins to suspect that this marriage might mean more than she expected.
Kriti isn’t the only one who has been keeping secrets. Even her perfectly responsible, too mature husband has something to hide.
Secrets have a way of revealing themselves, though. When the demons of her past show up on her doorstep, the secrets they‘ve been keeping threaten to destroy Kriti and her marriage; unless Kriti can reform herself into her own brand of a savior.
Hmm, I’ve seen a lot of these titles in bookstores but never picked one up. Maybe I should start with the Divakaruni one everyone’s talking about. Sounds more up my alley than the super dense historical stuff.
Older teens ready for a gut-punch might appreciate 'The Book of Everlasting Things' by Aanchal Malhotra. It's a sweeping, adult historical romance about a perfumer and a calligrapher separated by Partition, but the first half focusing on their childhood and young love is utterly captivating and teaches history in the most personal way.
I'm seeing a lot of contemporary here, which is great, but historical romance can be a fascinating window for YA readers. 'Rebel of the Sands' by Alwyn Hamilton isn't strictly Indian, but it's desert fantasy with strong influences. For something more directly rooted, 'A Shadow Bright and Burning' again isn't purely Indian, but the trend is there. Actually, finding pure Indian historical romance marketed as YA is tricky—most are adult or mythology-based. Maybe that's a gap waiting to be filled! The setting alone could make a love story feel epic and new.
