For me, the ones that fail are the ones that introduce the crucial clue in the last five pages. That's not clever, that's cheating. The best ones make you feel like you could have solved it, that the solution is built from components you've been handling the whole time. The moment of revelation should be a reorganization of existing knowledge, not the introduction of new knowledge.
