Best Sites For Light Novels In EPUB Format?

As someone who personally devours a huge number of light novels, I've tried a ton of ways to read them digitally. I have to say, J-Novel Club (officially licensed light novels) is one of my favorite ways to read them, in EPUB form, no less. The site itself is clean and easy to navigate, with the option to subscribe for early access to the start of each new novel (that's debuting on the site). The current catalog includes Ascendance of a Bookworm and The Faraway Paladin, two novels I highly recommend to anyone interested in the light novel genre. All of J-Novel Club's novels are available for purchase in EPUB form, have proper chapter divisions, and even include some of the novel's illustrations. Each of the novels are supported by the original authors, so by reading through J-Novel Club, you're supporting them directly.

One such store is BookWalker, run by the Japanese company Kadokawa. A very large collection of novels, manga, and even some original works published in English are available on the site. The work is done in EPUB format but is DRM-protected, however. Titles such as SAO and Overlord are available in high quality and while sales and promotions are frequent the store has a global site with an increasing amount of work translated into English and there is even an app to read the EPUB files on your mobile. While it is not perfect it is a good option.

The site Novel Updates, is a huge database of information for free light novels online. They provide all of the latest fan made light novels, plus information on unfinished novels and on going series. The site does not host the EPUB versions of these novels, but links to the translations that have been written. Many of these novels are later compiled into EPUB versions by fans, which can be found through links on Novel Updates. Some examples of novels you can read on this site include The Beginning After the End and Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. While some of the novels are poor quality, Novel Updates is an awesome site to discover new light novels that have not yet been officially released.

Kobo and Amazon Kindle stores also sell light novels, and the selection is increasing, although not restricted to the genre. Kobo in particular has established many partnerships with Japanese publishers to release their EPUBs without DRM. Often bestsellers such as ‘Re:Zero’ and ‘Konosuba’ are even put on sale. Overall it is easy to read the light novels on Kobo with all your devices connected and the ability to read a sample before buying makes it a great platform for readers as well. Even though it does not have the special spirit of a specialized platform for light novel readers it is by far the most reliable and comfortable way to purchase light novels online.

For more eclectic and archive focused searching of your series, try Anna's Archive, a search engine for many of the world’s shadow libraries and scholarly databases. Please, note that I do not advocate for the download of copyrighted work, however for completely out of print, or out of region published work that has not been digitised by anyone (officially), Anna’s Archive is often your best route to finding an EPUB version of a work. As with fan-work found elsewhere on the net, the quality of the scanbook will vary greatly – some are beautifully done, others are quite bland, often poorly formatted text files. As always, use this knowledge wisely, and if the work does become available for purchase, consider buying the official version to support the industry.

Also super niche and awesome: Fans who translate web novels to EPUB themselves and then offer them for download or reading on Patreon. Some of the more professional web novel fan translation groups for works like ‘The Beginning After the End’ and ‘Lord of the Mysteries’ offer EPUBs for each arc of a series as part of the higher tiers of their respective Patreons. (The EPUBs are generally way better than what you can scrape off of aggregator sites for a host of reasons including but not limited to formatting, cover art, and even original fan art.) You can pay to support the people working tirelessly to translate a work that will likely never receive an official English translation.

For a specific slice of the genre, check out Royal Road (web novel, mostly free) or Scribble Hub (web novel, free). Many successful authors now offer for free download the compiled EPUB for the completed arcs or volumes of their work, either on the story page or through their Patreon. Note that quality can vary greatly from author to author, but there are some absolute gems in the progression fantasy and litRPG genres. For example, “Mother of Learning” and “The Wandering Inn” started out as web novels, and their EPUBs are available for free download.
