I quickly put together a complete chapter list for the manga ‘Two Babies One Fox’ which just got to its serialization end, and learned just how messy chapter numbering can be from platform to platform. The very briefest and most practical way to get the complete and accurate list of chapters as they appeared is to start with the base numbers from the original serialization or publisher’s page. Then cross-reference with a reputable tracking database to find out how the chapters were grouped into volumes. Finally, scan the release notes from relevant translation groups for any side chapters or specials which are published in the tankobon volumes.

For something quick like this I would just set up a note file to read, Prologue (if it exists), then run through the chapters in numerical order and note the end, followed by a section headed ‘Extras/Specials’ for the odd omake, side story, etc. Sometimes these are even given as bonus artwork pages, and I get a kick out of stumbling upon a scene or two I had completely forgotten from my first read through the chapters. Easy enough to look up and inform your friend as to which chapter the scene appears in.

I created a simple spreadsheet where the first column has the official chapter number, the second has the translated chapter number, the third has the translated chapter title, and the fourth has a link to where it can be read online as well as any notes (e.g. “extra illustration” or “omake”). That way, all I had to do was search for the scene and I’d know what chapter and what the chapter was called. Bonus chapters are the best for filling out a character’s backstory and I can totally see how reading all the extras would be very time consuming. I’d be happy to explain how I set up my little spreadsheet and/or suggest some of the better sites to look for the tracking information as well as the translations. It really does make reading a lot easier and more enjoyable, and I still get a kick out of reading the early chapters.

So, main story, chronological order, recommended reading order for side stories, and notes on translation differences would all be wonderful sections.
