Saw some old Wattpad stories disappeared and want to revisit them. Any tips for accessing saved story pages or deleted books on the Internet Archive?

To archive a Wattpad story, go to archive.org, enter the URL of the story in the search bar and select the Wayback Machine archive option for that URL. The snapshots of the site will be displayed as they existed on the dates that the site was crawled by the search engine. Note that the WM only archives publicly accessible web sites and thus does not provide any archives of older, private or deleted stories, unless they were very popular at some point in time. The above scenario reminds me of the web novel ‘Turning Back Time to Save You’. The web novel is about a protagonist who uses a faulty time-reversal ability in order to try and prevent a tragedy from occurring. Each time he fails however, he has to try and fix up the mess he made in reverse before time irreversibly changes again. The story is a really great exploration of the costs and trade-offs of second chances.

I recently discovered the magic of the Wayback Machine, and it made my experience of reading on Wattpad even better. I was reading through my favorites one day and to my dismay, one of my favorite stories was no longer there. In desperation, I decided to look up the Wayback Machine, and boy, was I surprised! It’s a time machine for old web pages!
All you have to do is paste in the link of the Wattpad story and off you go! You can look through all of the different time cached versions of the story and even read through some of the drafts that I remember fondly. There’s a lot of great memories, even when the story isn’t in its final form. Plus, you can even read through the comments from other fans!
This is an amazing resource for readers and writers alike! It won’t get everything, but it’s well worth looking into for those story fragments that you just can’t seem to find. It’s made my day, so if you’re a Wattpad user then I highly recommend you take a look at the Wayback Machine too!

For starters, you need to search for the URL of the story you are trying to find and see what the Wayback Machine has archived for you. The Wayback Machine is an amazing way to look back at old websites, including ones such as Wattpad. I’ve recently found the site to be extremely useful, and I thought I’d share my own experience with it. I had a story which was taken off a few months ago, and I was devastated! The story contained all of my favorite characters, and the plot was developing in so many amazing ways. I was literally heartbroken, and I wished more than anything that I could go back to read the rest of it. The Wayback Machine became my only hope.
To find a date for a specific saved version of the page, the user has to find the date when the page was saved. Every date leads to a saved version of the page with all the stories, comments etc. on it. I found it really cool to read some of the earlier versions of my favorite stories, including comments from readers that I’ve never read before. These comments added to the sense of community and showed me how the story and its author had developed over time. I even left a comment thanking the author for their amazing work.
The Wayback Machine is not 100% perfect since some Wattpad stories might not have been fully archived. Nonetheless, it’s a great tool to travel back in time. So if you’ve lost track of a story you love to read, I highly recommend you look into this tool to get back to your favorite stories. Take control of your online work by archiving it, and enable a third-party to timestamp your work for future reference. Save a copy of your online work as you update your chapters on Wattpad, and by saving a copy of the URL of your online work using the Save Page Now function of the Wayback Machine, you will have established not only proof of online publication of your work but also a means to establish the date of publication of online content and to prove authorship. All online writers should follow this example.

I use a screen recorder to capture print-to-PDFs that aren’t working for me. I slowly scroll through the chapter and record the screen. The resulting video is terrible for later reading, but it’s 100% of what was on the screen, all formatting and images included. This is a terrible way to read a chapter, but it’s short for very small pieces of very visually unique content. I’d then use video to text software to get text out of the video, but that’s a whole other can of worms. I bring this up only as an extreme example of what people are willing to do to save content that a site is trying to prevent them from saving. It’s the digital equivalent of taking a picture of your screen.

It's probably another creepypasta story that's been made to look nicer with better production. I mean, this is basically the story of 'I found this weird cartoon from my childhood and now weird stuff is happening' which is a form of online folklore. It's taking that brand of internet horror and putting it into a fully realized 3D world. The 'based on true events' label is just another part of the creepypasta DNA that tries to make the story more real. It's just another digital campfire story and I'm excited to see where this takes us.

Library Genesis or Z-Library: Yes, I know, this is sort of in opposition to buying the book by the author now, who has already earned from their Wattpad stories, that were later published as ebooks. But sometimes these ‘illegal’ archives are the last resort for people who are unable to buy the commercial edition of a book for whatever reason (including it not being distributed to their country). Again, I’m not advocating for this sort of thing. But sometimes these websites function as nothing more than huge, last-resort archives of out of print books.

I have a simple offline reader for Wattpad called ‘Wattpad Offline Reader’ which works fine for me for downloading chapters and it’s been a lifesaver on my camping trip this week with patchy signal. The cache on this one is also pretty useful as it means I can continue to read halfway downloaded chapters. Simple and not a lot of frill but a nice little feature is being able to see a list of the chapters you’ve downloaded – feels like I’ve got a bookshelf in my pocket!

You can experience Wattpad totally for free by downloading the Wattpad app from your device’s app store. It’s totally legitimate and safe and there’s tons of content. The mobile experience is actually really cool because you can read in little chunks. There’s also the option to download individual stories so you can read them offline when you’re on the move or have no internet. I’ve wasted hours of my life browsing the horror tag and finding tons of super original and creepy stories that you wouldn’t find in a normal bookstore.
One minor complaint is that there are video ads for chapters, but that can be kind of broken from a reading perspective anyway. For people who don’t want to see ads though, you can subscribe for a premium version of Wattpad and it’s really not needed to read the vast majority of the stories though. The social features to read lists of other users’ favorite stories is really great for finding new stories too.

So I read an analysis by a writer on a blog. In it he talks about the fact that the stories on Wattpad Premium and Paid Stories are split into two different categories of content and as a result there is a two-tier ranking system on the site. Paid Stories are featured in special lists of Paid Stories and are shown differently in the app than Free Stories. The ranking for Paid Stories may even be altered to try to get more people to convert them into purchases over regular ratings.
This affects the way we now have to approach writing in order to receive awards. With Paid Stories receiving their own set of awards that reward commercial success, the traditional Watty Awards, which reward stories that receive tons of ad-supported love and interact greatly with their community, are catering to a different type of reader and therefore a different type of writer. So, we now have to decide early on which type of success we want to go for and then tailor our writing, genre and even the length of our chapters as well as the update frequency in order to receive the most awards and accolades for our work.

Let’s say you read 20 chapters of a 100-chapter long story in a week or so as a guest. Then you clear your browser cookies, you switch to a different device or the app updates. Suddenly your place in the story is gone. You have to re-read 20 chapters of work. With an account though, your place in the story is synced to the cloud. So you can read on your phone during lunch, and then pick up where you left off on your laptop at home later. For serious reading, or reading that you plan to continue later, an account is the way to go to avoid these kinds of frustrations. Wattpad, like most apps these days, is designed with the logged-in user in mind. Reading as a guest is a bare-bones, secondary function.
