So I know lots of people have strong feelings about Fifty Shades of Grey – lots of people LOVE it and it is all very romantic and sexy. And lots of people don’t get it at all and find it all a bit much. If you’re looking for the good bits, they’re scattered throughout the book. But it is really when Anastasia and Christian first start exploring their contract of Fifty Shades of Grey that things really start to get interesting, around Chapter 10. I also include the infamous “Red Room of Pain” scenes, in great detail later, for those that are interested in more of the really graphic content of the book.

Many readers enjoy the slow build-up of tension and the payoff. The author develops the tension in even the less sexual scenes which is part of their power. Fifty Shades of Grey has become a cultural phenomenon. While it is not everyone’s cup of tea, it has certainly captivated many readers and brought about many discussions and debates about sex, relationships and power.

It is generally acknowledged that the reason Fifty Shades of Grey is as popular as it is, is due to the very graphic sex scenes. They are sweet to begin with but very quickly become extremely explicit, often in a very surprising manner. The reader is very clearly advised when these situations are about to occur, usually in the form of warning by either Christian or Anastasia before they occur. The Red Room scenes are some of the most talked about, but by no means are all of the previous sexual encounters as neutral as they may have seemed.

The book is really polarizing, people either love it for the fantasy that it provides or they think it is really amateurish and cringe-worthy. Either way, it delivers on the sex scenes and if that’s what you’re looking for then you won’t be disappointed.

The Fifty Shades series: awkward prose, riveting moments, and many, many steaming moments of intercourse throughout. It begins with the emails between Ana and Christian before they meet in person and begin their intensely physical and emotionally complex relationship. The first scene of intimate intercourse occurs in Christian’s hotel room, and it marks a turning point in the book as Christian’s power and control of Ana play out against a backdrop of a tumultuous emotional relationship.

Much of interest occurs in later chapters as Ana finds her own footing in her relationship with Christian. Yes, it’s all about sex in this book, but there’s far more tension and interest in the twists and turns of the relationship between the two main characters than in the individual sex acts themselves. In the end, the best scenes of sex are but a small part of a far more complex novel.

As an audiobook, this is performed by Becca Battoe and she fully commits to each scene. Breathy intensity and vocal shifts to speech are amplified in audiobook form, making those famous ‘steam’ scenes even better. This again brings home to me the repetitive language in the novel. Often in the midst of a seriously erotic scene there will turn up ‘oh my’, ‘holy cow’ or ‘double crap’ which sounds rather comic. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster of tone and in retrospect one can see that the novel is written by a teenager from the 1950s who on occasion was overcome by a minor crisis. But, by ear, the passages are easily located by a sudden drop in pitch and an increase in dramatic pauses.

For my Kindle, I can tell when a sentence has garnered more than a couple hundred highlights or so and it’s a “steamy” part. Often these highlighted sections are denoted in Popular Highlights as well. I find it fascinating that a reader can get a sense of what kind of book they are reading from the highlights of other people. It feels like being part of a huge, silent book club.

The popular highlighted passages stick in my head because I know how many other people stopped reading on that same line. Sometimes the most highlighted lines aren’t even the most explicit, but rather the most melodramatic or quotable. Instead of us all being relieved that we’re not perverts in isolation, the steam from the book is crowd-sourced and becomes part of our cultural lexicon, ie “Laters, baby” or “I am fifty shades of fucked up”.

My mom’s book club just finished reading this for their book club meeting. The “spicy” parts of the book were all underlined in pencil by my mom. The resulting “annotated” novel was really funny. Apparently the 60+ women in the book club had a very serious discussion about whether the two main characters should have done it on the red room Chang personality platform or on the boathouse chang personality platform. There’s something wonderful about the physical book of a well-read romance novel – the underlines, the dog-earred corners, notes in the margin that say things like “really?!” or “ouch”. The annotated romance novel is a treasure trove of the history of a reader. In my mom’s copy of Outlander, next to a particularly flowery passage about sex she wrote “purple prose indeed!”. Reading the good parts in this way is a social activity, a treasure hunt of previous readers.

People will say things like, ‘Oh, you haven’t gotten to the part with the…you know, the thing?’ These passages become a sort of social currency and there’s a lot of shared delight in knowing where a particular passage is.
