Honestly, the biggest shaping force is probably Frank Herbert's 'Dune'. It introduced political and ecological depth to what could have been mere adventure. Modern space opera, from 'The Expanse' to certain Mass Effect plotlines, constantly grapples with that blend of feudal intrigue, resource scarcity, and messianic figures within a spacefaring context. It proved that the genre could be a vehicle for serious thematic exploration, not just ray-gun fights.
The idea of history itself as a lost or manipulated thing. In 'Dune', the Butlerian Jihad is a historical event that shapes the present. In many modern series, like the 'Halo' lore or 'Battlestar Galactica', ancient precursor civilizations or cyclical history are key drivers. That sense of digging through layers of forgotten or mythologized past to understand the present is a narrative mode classic sci-fi perfected.
One angle I haven't seen mentioned is how the foundational 'sense of wonder' from books like 'Childhood's End' or 'Ringworld' directly fuels the visual spectacle in modern space opera. That feeling of encountering something vast and ancient—that’s the emotional core. Today's shows and novels often try to replicate that awe with CGI leviathans or mysterious alien megastructures, but it all stems from that literary tradition of pushing imagination to its limits.
Sometimes I wonder if modern creators are chasing that same high readers got from those first descriptions of impossible scale.
They made homework cool. By incorporating real (or plausibly extrapolated) science, sociology, and linguistics, the best classic sci-fi made learning feel part of the adventure. Modern space opera audiences now expect that level of detail; we'll happily dig into wiki pages about fictional political factions or theoretical physics. The genre trains its audience to be curious about the workings of the world, not just the plot.
